On behalf of the Officers and Directors of the Horace Mann League of the USA, it is my pleasure to invite you to the 91st Annual meeting of the Horace Mann League, held in conjunction with the National Conference of AASA.  Our annual meeting will be held at the J.W. Marriott Hotel, Gold Ballroom, on Friday, February 22, 2013, from 11:45 am to 1:30 pm.

 

Our purpose in inviting you to attend HML's 91st Annual Meeting, as our guest, is to acquaint you with the League's activities and seek your support in recruiting new members to the League.    More about the League's mission and activities are at www.hmleague.org.

 

At our annual meetings we recognize individuals who made an impact on public education. Some of our recent recipients have been Jack Jennings, Diane Ravitch, John Goodland, Tom Sobol, Jonathan Kozol, Harry Wong, and Carroll Johnson, to name a few.  This year we are presenting awards to U.S. Senator Mark Warner, from Virginia and Dr. Thomas Payzant, recently retired professor from the Harvard Graduate Faculty.   Both will be featured speakers at our luncheon.

 

We know that your schedule is busy, especially during the AASA Convention, but we hope that you will be able accept our invitation.  If you are able to attend, please RSVP by Monday, February 18, 2013, by emailing me.  (Needed for lunch count.)

Dr. Tom Payzant will be awarded HML's "Outstanding Public Educator" award for 2013.  Tom was the Assistant Secretary of Education, long-time superintendent of the Boston Public Schools, and most recently a professor at Harvard's Graduate School of Education.  Tom is the recent author book,"Urban and District School Leadership.
 
U.S. Senator Mark Warner, representing the state of Virginia, has a long history of supporting public education while Governor of Virginia and in the U.S. Senate.  Senator Warner has led his colleagues in making significant modifications to NCLB and in support of educational policies that strengthen local school boards and school administrators.
