This week's postings:
#3. Never fear failure. Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

"The fundamental reason kids are dying in massacres like this one is not that we have lunatics or criminals - all countries have them - but that we suffer from a political failure to regulate guns."

Public schools were founded in this country to make sure that future generations of citizens have an appreciation for democratic values, understand what we have in common as Americans, and have the skills to be productive members of society.

Debates such as these are not settled because people simply split the difference between their positions. We need to widen this discussion, and clarify the consequences of the solutions now being pursued by our political and economic leaders.

In a Darwinian battle the schools would compete for students with the best schools thriving and good riddance to the losers. It is really hard to believe that school "reformers" didn't foresee the result: the non-charters left with the most needy kids, fewer resources and, inevitably, failure.
