People want to know why, then, this administration seems blind to the consequences of adopting President Bush's signature No Child Left Behind (NCLB) policy, which set schools up to fail, stigmatized them, and then undermined public confidence in public education.

But the Gates Foundation  wanted to show quick results-scale-up, reproduce more.  Faster.  They tempted us with money...   They wanted some easy way to measure success, so they settled for test scores.  We resisted, but...   We're still around, but holding on by a fingernail. 

And when it comes to the future of public education, all of us need to think hard about one of the most important responsibilities of a democratic society to its citizens - and then support Chicago's teachers as they move into the history-making struggle of the next few weeks. 
 
Empathy, Education, and Musical Chairs  by Nadine Dolby As educators and educational researchers, that means that we need to resist the current threats to education, while proactively building new realities: ones grounded in an understanding that a more peaceful, cooperative, humane, empathic world can emerge if we nurture it in ourselves and our children.
