DOR Allows Consumers to Opt In to New TAVT Fee

After March 1, 2013 and before January 1, 2014

The DOR is allowing consumers to opt in to the new TAVT fee and eliminate paying future Ad Valorem Tax, if they qualify. There is a small window of opportunity for people to opt in.

If the vehicle was purchased in Georgia between January 1, 2012 and March 1 2013 and titled in this state, the owner is eligible to opt in to the new system. If you qualify to opt in, you will get credit for any sales tax and ad valorem tax previously paid up to the amount of TAVT due. However, if the sales tax and ad valorem tax previously paid is less than the TAVT due, you will need to make up the difference when you opt in. The earliest date that qualified owners will be able to opt in to the new system is March 1, 2013. The latest date that qualified owners will be able to opt in to the new system is December 31, 2013.

Vehicles purchased prior to January 1, 2012, will not qualify for the opt in option and will continue to pay annual ad valorem tax when renewing their tag.

You may want to consider notifying every customer you did business with after January 1, 2012 to let them know that they probably have the opportunity to save some money by opting into the TAVT system. Tell them to have their VIN number ready and go on-line to the DOR Title Ad Valorem Tax Calculator page to see just how much they could save by opting into the system.   http://onlinemvd.dor.ga.gov/Tap/vinnumber.aspx

Vehicle owners who qualify to opt into the TAVT system must visit their local Tag Office to do so. They need to bring with them their Bill of Sale showing how much they paid in sales tax and also need to know how much they paid in Ad Valorem Tax.
