Message from Pastor Jim Fall Festival 2014

Dear Fellow Servants of Jesus Christ,

Wow! This past week was amazing!

Not only did the week begin with a wonderful Kirkin O' the Tartan celebration, but it also gave us an outstanding Whitetail Banquet for our men. The incredible food was accompanied by a powerful presentation of the Gospel that focused on building our identity not on what we do, but on our relationship with Jesus.

Then this past Sunday evening approximately 1000 folks gathered for our Fall Festival. A big shout out to all who helped with this fun-filled event that helped connect folks from the community to our ministry. Our members outdid themselves in providing games, food and an amazing Trunk or Treat area! The costumes and decorations were wonderfully creative!

We move forward now with a new ministry that is being formed here at Saxe Gotha called Intergenerational Prayer Partners. We actually stole this idea "fair and square" from our sister congregation, Lake Murray Presbyterian Church. The idea is to pair up adult members (over the age of 21) who have volunteered with a church member who is under 21 years old.

We are kicking off this ministry with our middle school, high school, and college-aged kids (over 200 of them) and we hope to add the younger kids next fall. We ask each adult volunteer to commit to pray for that youth by name every day for a year, occasionally write a personal note and let him or her know that prayers are being sent to God for that child. We will be mailing a letter and permission form to the parents of the youth this week. This is another great way for us to commit ourselves to the next generation!

Praise the Lord for His work through you - members of Saxe Gotha!

Blessings!

Pastor Jim

This is a service that offers comfort and hope for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Anyone is welcome to attend and light a candle in memory of his or her loved one. Please be sure to extend an invitation to friends and family members who may need this comfort prior to the holiday season.

Adultsadults    prayer hands

Intergenerational Prayer Partners This is an exciting new ministry that gives the adult members of our congregation the opportunity to fulfill the vows we take every time a child is baptized - to nurture him or her in the faith. As an adult volunteer you will be given the name of one of our youth (same gender but not a relative).  In this role you commit to pray for that youth by name every day until next fall.  We also ask you to occasionally send a note to the child to let him or her know that you are praying for them.  If you are willing to serve in this special way, please contact Helen Harrison Coker via phone or email (803.359.7770).

smiling-people-banner.jpg Singles Over 35 years Are you single and over 35?  Then we need your help!  We are looking for a team of singles who are interested in serving and growing together and connecting with other singles.  If you are willing to serve on this team, please call Stacey Leventis (803.359.0556).

Russ Crabtree Visit  If you were out of town this past Sunday and missed hearing Russ Crabtree speak, please know that you can find an audio copy of his sermon on the SGPC Media page of our website. There you can also find audio files for recent sermons, so that you can still catch up on the previous Sunday's sermon even if you were not in town that day.

Offering Ushers Needed  Please know that we need more volunteers to serve as ushers for both the 8:30 and 11:00 am traditional services.  Our ushers serve on one of six teams, so you would only be needed once every six weeks. If you are interested in serving our church in this way, please contact either Jan Harrison or Beth Phibbs.

children Bible Splash Dock Goes Intergenerational You can still join this Wednesday night class that's from 6:30-7:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall. We're proud to present something very unique for the entire family! Children (grades 1-5), parents, grandparents, interested adults are invited to connect with one another as we learn about the Old Testament using the "What's in the Bible" curriculum created by Phil Vischer (creator of  the Veggie Tales). The DVD series is designed to walk kids and adults through the entire Bible. Its intent is to teach both kids and parents the Bible - God's great rescue plan through brand new characters, fast-paced animation and catchy tunes. It's one journey that you won't want to miss as you to learn together as a family and open the door for spiritual conversation!

Quick Tip of the Week Check out the article "Raising Children is a Terrible Waste of Time." The author touches upon the societal crisis of not valuing the hard job of parenting. "Every other profession pales in comparison to your contribution of raising men and women. Because everything depends on who we bring up to carry out life in the next generation. Everything." Be sure to check out this interesting but worthwhile perspective!

ThisIKnow Elementary Parents Kids join us for Sunday School this Sunday, November 2nd! Our elementary children are exploring a chronological approach to Sunday school, as we've begun with Genesis and are working our way through God's rescue plan, the Bible. This journey is long, but a very important one for our children to grasp. Please make it a priority to bring your children to Sunday School. This Sunday we will learn about Jacob and Laban; check out the Parent Resource for this lesson. Also, know that it's never too late to join the fun at Sunday School! This is a time when we really get into the heart of the Bible, so please consider bringing your children on Sunday mornings.

Change for SudanSudan Special Collection

Please know that on Sunday, November 2nd, in addition to our normal offering we will take up a collection for our Sudan mission efforts. Change for Sudan does indeed affect positive change in the lives of those suffering in Sudan. In the past our donations have been used to send Bibles, purchase sleeping mats and cooking utensils, as well as provide bedding for emergency relief housing. The situation remains bleak in Sudan; people are dealing with devastation left by ongoing conflict in the area. Your support can be a positive light of hope in the lives of the Sudanese.

Sudan Missions To learn more about these mission efforts, watch the Sudan 2014: Resisting Evil video on YouTube. It features former UN Sudan chief, Mukesh Kapila, who is now a Special Representative on Crimes Against Humanity for the Aegis Trust. In the video he visits a Yida refugee camp in South Sudan, travels into the Nuba Mountains to visit a hospital and view bomb damage from a Sudanese Government air attack. Please continue to pray for the people of Sudan and give generously to assist them in their struggles.

The food collected will be used for a variety of local charitable endeavors including our Backpack Partners program with Pelion Elementary. (Backpack food includes easy to prepare, individually packaged food like mac and cheese, ramen noodles, juice boxes, pudding and grits.) Please drop off all such donations in the blue bins located throughout the SGPC campus. Thanks in advance for your generosity in helping others who have great need!
