Stewardship 2014
WeAreSGStewardship Update

WE ARE SAXE GOTHA, and with your help, our church reaches thousands of people every year - training up our next generation; supporting local & international missions trips; providing compassionate care and benevolence for those in need; presenting health & recreation opportunities, evening classes, and even worship services EVERY Sunday!  But none of these things would happen without our members (that's US) supporting our church with our time, our talents and our treasure. See the recent stewardship videos for reasons why tithing is important to our church.

Although this past Sunday was Commitment Sunday, if you weren't here or forgot, you can still turn in your pledge card in to the church office. Download your 2015 Pledge card, ACH/Bank Draft, or even pledge online with a debit/credit card at
our SGPG Giving page today. Thank you for dedicating your gifts to God through your tithes to Saxe Gotha!

children fall festival
Fall FallFestivalFestival:
October 26

Fall Festival is back this year!  A beloved event has been renewed, so join us on Sunday, October 26th from 5-7 pm! It will be a ton of fun, complete with a "Trunk of Treat" area, games, cool inflatables, popcorn, hotdogs and, of course, children in their favorite Halloween costumes. This event will be FREE for our church family as well as anyone in the community!  So mark your calendars now and invite friends and neighbors - especially those who may not have a church home, as this is a great introduction to our Saxe Gotha family.

Want to volunteer? We will need many helping with the festival that day, so check out our Volunteer Sign Up webpage to pick one or more slots.  We will need over 100 volunteers to make this Fall Festival a success!

We will also need 25-30 Trunk or Treat cars! You decorate with a theme, provide the candy and then kindly dole it out to cute children dressed in their favorite costumes. Contact Stephanie Jones Fitts (803.315.0405) to sign up!

Questions about the Fall Festival? Please contact Lee Ann Alexander or Lori Lowman. We look forward to seeing you as a volunteer and guest at Saxe Gotha's Fall Festival!

Russ Crabtree suicide Russ Crabtree Visits OctoberRussCrabtree 26

Russ Crabtree will visit and preach for all three services on Sunday, October 26th. Please know that he will discuss surviving suicide and the Lord's work in helping him to overcome depression and suicidal thoughts. Due to the mature subject of his sermon, parents are welcome to take their children ages 4 and up to SPLASH worship in the gym that day, if they feel the topic is too sensitive. Older elementary children are encouraged to stay for the sermon if parents feel it's appropriate, as depression and suicide is unfortunately sometimes a terrible reality in the teen years. Visit A Second Day website to learn more about Russ Crabtree and his book, The Second Day Project, which tells his story. Please invite friends and neighbors who might be interested and in need of hearing Russ Crabtree's story.

Message from Pastor Jim Jim casual 8-2014

Dear Fellow Servants of Jesus Christ,

The Kirkin' O' the Tartan is this weekend! Please remember that there is only one service at 11 am in the sanctuary this Sunday, as we will gather as one and celebrate our unity in Christ. As always, you can expect outstanding music during our Kirkin' O' the Tartan celebration that will feature our own talented vocalists and musicians, as well as the Palmetto Pipes and Drums.

After the service, we will gather in the Lighthouse Atrium for a delicious church picnic. This will be a great opportunity to connect with friends, but will also be a wonderful way to meet new folks! Please plan to wear your nametags and reach out to those individuals who you don't know.

There are more exciting events in October:

  • Men's Whitetail Banquet featuring professional hunter and musician Brent Henderson is on Thursday, October 23rd at 6 pm.
  • Russ Crabtree, a nationally known speaker, will preach at our services on Sunday, October 26th. His message will focus surviving depression and suicidal thoughts.
  • Our Fall Festival offering a "Trunk or Treat" area, food and games is on Sunday, October 26th from 5:00-7:00 PM. Sign up to volunteer!
  • Registrations are now being received for Upward Basketball (grades 1-5), as well as our middle and high school leagues.

As you can see, a lot of great things are happening! Please be sure to use these opportunities to connect others to what the Lord is doing here at Saxe Gotha!

In Christ's love,

Pastor Jim

Kirkin header tartans
Kirkin' O' the KirkinTartan is October 19th!

Join us for the celebration of the 32nd anniversary of Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church!  We'll celebrate in traditional, Scottish style on Sunday, October 19th by having The Palmetto Pipes & Drums perform. We ask that everyone wear their family (or favorite) tartan colors, too! That day we will come together for one service at 11 am in the Sanctuary to celebrate this grand occasion. You can learn more about the Scottish history behind Saxe Gotha's celebration on our website. Please know that there will be no SPLASH worship that day for children, as they are asked to worship with their families during this special service.

Following this service we'll also have a Church Potluck Picnic in the Light House.  Our church will provide the baked/fried chicken, drinks and paper products, while we ask members to bring something to share (according to your last name):

  • A-O:  Sides (Casseroles, Vegetables, Starches, Salads)
  • P-Z:  Desserts

Please bring enough food for your entire family plus three other people in an appropriate container to keep food hot or cold until the picnic begins. Please drop off your food in the light house prior to the worship service.

In order to plan for appropriate numbers, please let us know you are coming! Please RSVP today by  emailing Candi Ashcraft your name, number attending and phone number in case she has questions. Also, contact Candi, too, if you can volunteer to help set up, serve or clean on Sunday for the picnic.

Finally, we're giving everyone a chance to serve while celebrating by bringing a jar of peanut butter, canned goods, backpack food items and/or winter coats for the needy!  See details in the Coats & Cans article in missions. All collected will be shared with local charities.

So mark October 19th on your family calendar and make plans to join us for the Saxe Gotha Kirkin' O' the Tartan!

RespiteCare Volunteer for Respite Care: October 18
Plan to serve with this wonderful ministry that provides on-site care, love and support for special needs families and their guests every third Saturday of the month. The effort lasts from 4:30 until 7:30 PM. Volunteers meet in the SGPC CDC/preschool area. If you are able to help, please contact Sara Webber (803.957.9421) or Kathy Collins (803.996.0103) via email or phone no later than the Wednesday prior to Respite Care (Oct. 15). This will allow leaders time to make sure that the program has adequate volunteer coverage.

Backpack Partners Program Update  Please know that our church volunteers were able to pack 60 bags for the backpack program!  Saxe Gotha Presbyterian is a "Faith Partner" with Lexington School District One in providing food in backpacks for needy kids from Pelion Elementary. Please know how much your donations to this ministry were appreciated!  We continue to partner during the school year; in order to fulfill our monthly commitment our church needs the following for this ministry every month: 107 juice boxes, 131 packs of grits, 77 packets/cups ramen noodles, 57 pudding cups, and 120 mac and cheese microwaveable cups. If you, your circle or small group is interested in donating food towards this effort, please drop off needed in the SGPC Mission bins that are located on campus and mark for backpack program. Please contact Holly Waldrip to let her know if your class can help. Thanks to everyone who is assisting with this wonderful mission effort!
