CONVERGE Prom Lock-In

 PromLI

We had an awesome time on Saturday, April 20th hosting the CONVERGE Prom Night Lock-In. We had 61 participants come to be a part of this terrific night. There were messy games, silly games, even "gladiator" games. We also shared a great time in God's word! Please join me in thanking all of the volunteers and support that made this awesome night possible. I hope that you will keep CONVERGE in your prayers as we continue to be a valid avenue of ministry for many years to come, impacting the next generation and giving God Joy.

Message from Pastor Jim JimHeadshot09

Dear Fellow Servants of Jesus Christ,

Often you hear it said, "You don't have to go overseas to do mission work. There is plenty of work to do here!"

While this statement is true on one level, the thinking and attitude behind it frequently lacks God's heart for the whole world. Certainly, there are a lot of mission opportunities locally and we need to avail ourselves to them through sacrificial service. However, we need to be sure that we share God's global perspective as we seek to further His Kingdom. After all, Jesus commanded us to "make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:16ff) and to be his "witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

Consequentially, a healthy missions program that embraces God's heart for the world reaches out locally, nationally and internationally. This is what our missions at Saxe Gotha seek to be. While the vast majority of our missions efforts touch and transform lives locally through over 40 ministries, we also seek to reach out beyond our community.

Not only do we have our partners serving in Sudan and another ministering in Haiti, we also offer short-term mission experiences for our members. Indeed, we have a goal that every SGPC member benefit from a short-term mission experience. In June, a team will be leaving for Kenya to engage in evangelism, discipleship and pastor training.

Please consider being part of a new team currently being formed to go to Honduras from January 26 to February 2, 2014. This team will share the good news of Jesus Christ as they offer medical care, dental care, eye exams, children's ministry, and clothing. Read our Honduras article for all of the details.

Finally, remember that this Sunday mission volunteers will be preselling our new cookbooks surrounding each church service. Prepurchase a cookbook for Mother's Day and receive a beautiful card for your mom telling of your gift! Each cookbook will sell for $20 and all of the proceeds will support our youth and adult missions programs.

Let's reach the world for Jesus Christ!

In Christ's love,

Pastor Jim

May 12, 2013: Celebratory Service  If you haven't already heard, please know that Youth/Graduate Recognition Sunday will be held on Sunday, May 12th, which is also Mother's Day.  This will give our church an opportunity to celebrate the work of our moms in passing on the faith to the next generation, as well as recognize the accomplishments of our young people.  The reason for the move is that Sunday, May 19th needs to be reserved as a possible date for our congregation to vote on the proposal regarding Saxe Gotha Presbyterian leaving the PCUSA and joining ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians.  Please make plans to join us this day for a wonderful day of our youth leading our worship services.

GrandparentsChildFMSCA Mother's Day Offering: May 12th On Mother's Day churches across South Carolina will participate in the Mother's Day Offering for the Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina (PCSC).  This special offering supports seniors who outlive their resources and depend on the generosity of others for their care.  Thanks to the support of Presbyterian congregations and generous individuals, over $1.1 million in charitable care was provided last year by PCSC.  Please consider participating in this special offering and making a difference in the lives of older adults who are counting on us!  Information and offering envelopes are located in the pew racks.

Global Day of Prayer: May 19th  During the last few years, thousands of believers have gathered together in various venues around Columbia to cry out to God in repentance, prayer for our nation and prayer for our city.  We have seen God answering many of these prayers as thousands of job opportunities came to our city and church leaders started working together in a greater way.  We live in uncertain times, but our God, the Rock of Ages, will not be shaken.   This year's Global Day of Prayer in Columbia will be held on Sunday, May 19th from 3pm - 5pm at six or more regional venues instead of one central venue. The venue for Lexington will be The Harvest Church on Hwy 378.  Please go to www.gdop-columbia.org with questions or to offer your support for the 2013 Global Day of Prayer Columbia. One day, one church, one prayer!

Due to such a huge response to our call for support of this amazing ministry, we'll not only be able to support our two Compassion children, but add a third child to our mission efforts! We'll present check totaling $1126.58 to Compassion that will support these three children for the next year. What a blessing to continue to do our part to alleviate poverty one child at a time!

Messy Games Parents Night Out: May 17th  Register now for our next Parents Night Out on Friday, May 17th from 6:30-9:00 PM.  Parents are welcome to enjoy a night to themselves while the 1st - 5th grade kids have messy games night and watch vintage "Double Dare" episodes.  Ages 3, 4 and K5 will enjoy outside relay games and fun!  It's a free event but reservations are required and spots are limited.  Call Lori Lowman (359.7770, ext. 28) to register your child.

SGPC Nursery Procedures  Our SGPC Nursery now has a dedicated phone line (359.2055) to alert parents when their child is in our care and they are needed.  Accordingly, parents should save "SGPC Nursery" and the number above in their cell contacts. The next time you visit the nursery we'll ask you to complete a card with your child's name and your cell phone number for our records.  If you ever see the SGPC Nursery number pop up on your phone, don't answer, but just come to the nursery immediately.  Our staff will only use this in cases of injury or unhappiness that has lasted longer than 10 to 15 minutes.  This should help expedite getting parents to the nursery when needed.  Thanks for your cooperation in making this system successful!

Here are great opportunities for you to take part in your child's daily spiritual walk, as you lay the spiritual foundation for your child.

Parents be sure to check out the article "Just Keep Sowing, Just Keep Sowing." Do you ever wonder wonder whether your persistent prayers for your children, a friend, a parent really make a difference?  Check out this article on sowing seeds through prayer.  You will be encouraged by the points  made in this piece and will begin to understand that God works behind the scenes even when we are not able to see the results!
