TASTE OF TORAH

This Shabbat we find ourselves in the middle of the book of Leviticus for Parshat K'doshimK'doshim means "holiness," and this section of the Torah is often referred to as the Holiness Code.  It begins with the words, "You shall be holy for I, Adonai your God am holy," and it continues with a list of commandments intended to bring holiness into our lives.  We are commanded to honor our parents, to celebrate Shabbat, to feed the hungry, to be truthful, to respect our elders and those with disabilities, just to name a few.  In fact most of the values by which we live today come from this week's Torah portion.

What also comes from this week's Torah portion are my three favorite words of Torah - V'ahavtah l'rei'acha k'mocha - love your neighbor as yourself.  If I, like Rabbi Hillel, were asked to recite the whole Torah while standing on one foot, I would say v'ahavtah l'rei'acha k'mocha.  These three little words teach us two very big lessons.  The first is that we are to love others, and by this we mean that we are to treat everyone with kindness, justice and respect no matter their gender, age, religion, ability, or whom they choose to love.  We are to forgive others when they show remorse for their mistakes, and we are to honor the fact that every single human being is created in the image of God.  The second lesson these three words of Torah teach us is one that often gets far less attention, but is equally important, and that is we are also commanded to love ourselves.  The same kindness, respect, and forgiveness we extend to others, we must also extend to ourselves, for we too are created in God's image.

May this Shabbat remind us to love others, to love ourselves, and to do something every day to bring a little holiness into our world.

-Rabbi Shana Nyer

Holocaust Survivor to Speak

All adult members of the congregation are invited to join our Vintage members and Kolaynu students on Sunday, April 27 at 10:30 am for bagels and coffee, with the program to follow at 11:00 am. Ms. Gold is a Holocaust survivor born in Budapest, Hungary and will share the incredible story of her life before, during, and after the Holocaust.

Vintage Film Festival

Join Vintage Suburban on Wednesday, April 30 at noon for lunch and a free film showing.  Defiance will be shown at 12:30 pm. The movie Defiance is the story of the largest armed rescue operation of Jews by Jews in World War II. Led by Tuvia Bielski, this group totaled 1,200 Jews by 1944. Written by Nechama Techas, a holocaust survivor and author, we learn that many people fled from the Germans and hid in the forest in Poland. There were many such groups, but this story focuses on Tuvia's group and the Russian group with which they interacted.

We are fortunate to have Robert (Bobby) Zelwin, whose parents were married in the film, as our guest speaker. He will answer questions about his parents' journey and share their remarkable story.

Please bring your own lunch. Dessert and beverages, provided by Vintage, will be served so we can munch as we listen to Bobby. RSVP to Abby at admin@suburbantemple.org or 216.991.0700.
