July Mission of the Month: Thornwell Home & Building Families
Founded as a Presbyterian ministry in 1875, Thornwell Home for Children is a joyful Christian community, offering hope and wholeness to children and families. Its goals are to provide loving homes for abused, abandoned and neglected children, to offer an opportunity for healing by providing proper healthcare and mental health counseling for every Thornwell child, and to offer Thornwell's children hope for a successful future by providing educational support and teaching self-advocacy.

On Thornwell Sunday, we heard The Rev. Dr. Elliott Smith preach at both worship services and speak during the Sunday school hour describe heart-warming, and at times heart-wrenching, stories about the mission of Thornwell and its impact in the lives of children and families. He gave us vivid reasons for our church to continue its strong support of Thornwell.

In addition to supporting Thornwell Home, Spring Valley Presbyterian Church is the first Midlands area host to Thornwell's Building Families Program. This joint ministry began in 2013.

Thornwell's Building Families Program is a community-based, intensive in-home program designed to address the needs of families in crisis. The Program provides services that build upon the existing strengths of families in order to reduce the stressors interfering with healthy family functioning.

The goal of Building Families is to stabilize families and help family members grow together. The Building Families Program equips families with the skills necessary to ensure safety of the children, reduce or eliminate the need for out-of-home placement of the children, and keep families together.

Building Families creates impactful change and emotional strength in families by using researched and proven treatment methods in a personalized way. Parents learn how to set age-appropriate boundaries and maintain discipline without anger or violence. Thornwell Family Specialists use positive reinforcement, modeling, role playing, and other methods to teach lasting, concrete parenting and communication skills. Our Family Specialist, Elizabeth Ogorek, has assisted twelve families in two years and currently has 3 open cases and 4 in the referral process. The success of the program is best exemplified by one mother who has volunteered to be included in Thornwell's promotional videos and regularly tells others about the program and encourages them to participate. Elizabeth will share more about this family on Thornwell Sunday.

SVPC supports Building Families in many ways. One family participated in VBS this year and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. New needs, whether they are in-kind items or volunteer time, are posted in your bulletin, hot topics, and updated on the website under the Building Families tab. Our congregation has always responded generously to these needs. If you have any questions or ideas to help build the program or assist families please feel free to contact Elizabeth at the church or by email.

SVPC Donation Closet
We are currently taking food and clothing donations in the SVPC Donation Closet located in the Atrium. Donations are delivered to local organizations that assist those in need.

Thank you for your continued support and helping those in our community.
Montreat Family Retreat

Friday - Sunday, October 14-16, 2016
Set Your Feet Upon a Rock.
A chill in the air, color in the trees and church family all around. This gathering is for all ages, families, singles and couples! Montreat is the Presbyterian Conference Center located approximately 17 miles east of Asheville, NC and just north of Black Mountain, NC. This is a wonderful time to meet friends, new and "renewed".

The backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains is perfect place for family fun, morning hikes, sipping coffee on the porch or moments of personal reflection. The hours are unstructured to allow everyone to pursue their interests. Saturday morning kicks off with a hike for all ages. If you prefer a more level path, there are miles of trails and beautiful sights within the 4000 acres of the Montreat facility. Arrive when you can on Friday afternoon or evening. Activities throughout the day on Saturday include playgrounds, streams to follow, cards and other games, shopping and just being together.
