Classical Manners for the Modern Youth
From the 1934 high-school textbook Good Manners used in "Household Science" class of that day:

"Rule No. 167.  Choosing the Hotel.  If a boy or girl must go to a hotel without an older person, he should find out from his parents what hotel is best for him.  In case of an emergency, inquire of the travers' guide, station police, or station agent.  It is better to choose a well-known hotel, rather than a small one in an outer district of the city.  Never ask a stranger or a chance acquaintance to suggest or direct you to a hotel."

   Newsworthy Notices

Students, parents, and faculty gathered in the Acropolis last Tuesday to watch the State-Of-The-Union address and discuss it afterwards.  Pizza, drinks, and politics -
what an awesome school we have!

Sunny Taylor, Dr. Robinson, and Henry Halgren.
7th Grader Wins Geography Bee. Congratulations to expert geographer Sunny Taylor.  On January 12, ten grade-level champions representing the 4th through 8th grades competed in the LCS library, answering geography questions that covered the entire globe. Sunny survived stiff competition to take the first place prize.  5th grader Henry Halgren earned 2nd place, and 6th grader Dharini Sriram took third.  Sunny will now have the opportunity to take an online test to qualify for the State Geographic Bee in April.

Funding Needed.  The 2016 additions of a new gymnasium, Stoa, new high-school parking lot, vestibule for the elementary school, and elementary-storage expansion are indeed exciting developments.  However, it's important for everyone to know these projects are still not fully funded.  Liberty has borrowed funds sufficient to proceed with construction, but we must raise additional funds for indoor finishing and furnishings along the way.  The price tag is not small.  CLICK HERE for all details of Liberty's Capital Campaign.  More parent help is needed for multiple strategies to raise money.  For those interested in amplifying financial commitments to the school, volunteers are needed on the school's Fundraising Committee, our Grant-Writing Committee, our Financial Advisory Committee, and in the general pool of volunteers.  To volunteer, send a MESSAGE HERE.   Ongoing contributions can be made securely - CLICK HERE.  Thank you in advance for your generosity and for your ongoing investment in Liberty.

Recognize this vehicle?  Please help us identify four suspects who vandalized school property and private property late Friday evening/early Saturday morning.
Vandalism At LCHS.  The Fort Collins Police Department and LCHS administration are asking for help in identifying four suspects who vandalized the school and multiple private vehicles parked in the LCHS parking lot over the weekend.  The vandalism took place late Friday night/early Saturday morningVandals threw eggs at the school building and vehicles; and broke car windows - probably with a BB-gun, a pellet gun, or some other small-caliber weapon.  Please take a careful look at the nearby image captured on a school's security camera.   If you have any knowledge of, or even theories about, who might have been involved in this incident, please contact the school or the Fort Collins Police Department which is actively investigating this matter.

Liberty kindergartners receive their "Challenge Keys" from
LCHS Thirteeners.

LEGIO XIII To LCS.  Last Friday, newly inducted seniors of the LCHS Legion of Thirteen traveled to the elementary school to issue "challenge keys" to the kindergarteners.  The ceremonial tradition challenges kindergarteners to graduate from LCHS twelve more years from now - in the Mighty LCHS Class of 2028!  On that night, they'll trade in their white keys for the symbol of the Legion of Thirteen - the red key with gold ribbon. CLICK HERE or on the nearby video to see kinders receiving their keys from Thirteeners - those LCHS seniors who are completing 13 years at Liberty Common School.

Congratulations to LCHS scholar
and new Eagle Scout Alex Shinn.
Eagle Scout.  On Monday, January 11, LCHS scholar Alex Shinn passed his Eagle Board of Review and officially joined the elite ranks of Eagle Scout - the highest rank in Scouting; and thereby reaching  a goal he set for himself as a Tiger scout in first grade. Only about 5% of Scouts attain this rank. Alex is a member of Troop 97, chartered by St. Luke's Episcopal Church.  In addition to his collection of hard-earned merit badges, 21 are required for Eagle, Alex has been the troop's scribe and takes advancement of younger Scouts very seriously. He completed his Eagle project for the LCHS community - 6 custom-made art tables in the Atelier de Liberté.

Senior Speakout:  In an annual LCHS tradition, the Class of 2016 imparted true wisdom last week to its
classmates, instructors, and administrators.

Senior Speakout.  Last Wednesday, student representatives of the mighty Class of 2016 took the Lyceum podium and shared what was on their minds.  "Senior Speakout" is an annual LCHS tradition hatched by the school's first senior class.  The pioneer Class of 2013 felt compelled to "speak out" about its time at Liberty, to impart some advice to younger schoolmates, and its leaders petitioned the administration for the chance.  The request was granted, the event was labeled "Senior Speakout," and the name stuck.    CLICK HERE or on the nearby video link to watch and hear what this year's seniors had to say to their school.

CSU Engineering-student-instructor Mr. Nate Golter holds up the two Space-Shuttle tiles LCHS received last Friday from NASA.

Shuttle Tiles.  As an authorized and qualified engineering program, LCHS's engineering department receives museum-quality space artifacts from time to time for the benefit of our students' education.  Last week, we received two Space-Shuttle tiles from NASA.  Stop by the Engineering-Department showcase in Da Vinci Hall to see the space-program artifacts.

The Trashformers team members are 7th graders Ryan Saldanha, David Gao, Liam O'Malley, Ian Smith, Charlie Wang and Kellen Hansen.  They are coached by CJ Smith.

Port 5 team members are 9th grader Taylor Reinke, 8th grader Lilly Wilson, 7th grader Carolyn Carpenter, 6th graders Sydney Reinke and Amber Kranz. They were coached by Bill Kranz and Evelyn Carpenter.
Robotics Teams Impress.  The LCHS "Port-5" team placed third out of more than 300 teams from throughout Colorado at the state robotics tournament held over the three-day weekend.  The LCHS "Trashformers" team won the Core Values/Inspiration Award.  It was a successful weekend for the school's robotics engineers, programmers, promoters - and for team coach Mr. Bill Kranz.

This is the face of Colorado's #1 robotics coach.  Out of more than 300 robotics-
team coaches throughout Colorado,
LCHS's Mr. Bill Kranz was voted the top coach.  In his honor, tomorrow is "Bill
Kranz Day" at LCHS. Mustaches are encouraged.

Bill Kranz Day at LCHS.  Tomorrow, Tuesday, January 20th is "Bill Kranz Day" at LCHS.  All students and faculty are hereby authorized to wear mustaches on Bill Kranz Day in honor of Colorado's top-rated, #1 robotics coach Mr. Bill Kranz.  At a weekend state robotics tournament, the mustachioed Kranz was nominated and designated as the state's best, most celebrate robotics-team coach.  The student who looks most like Mr. Kranz tomorrow - in Mr. Kranz's opinion - wins a prize, and will have his/her photo posted here in Monday Notes next week.

Latin-2 Transition Meeting For Current 7th And 8th-Grade Families.
In an effort to provide more information on the new LCHS Latin-2 requirement for 8th grade and graduation, the LCHS administration will hold an informational meeting on Tuesday, January 26th, 6:30-7:30PM in the LCHS Great Hall.  Members of the LCHS administration, the Academic Advisory Committee, and the Board of Directors will be on hand to comment on the transition and answer questions.
-  The 8th-grade Latin-2 requirement begins with the current 7th-grade class, the class of 2021.
- The Latin-2 high-school graduation requirement will begin with the class of 2021.
- Current 8th-grade students, the class of 2020, are eligible to opt into the updated graduation requirements.
- Members of the Class of 2020 will be asked during course registration (see dates below) to choose their graduation- requirement path.
Current 9th-11th grade students, the classes of 2017-2019, will be held to the graduation requirements that were in place when they started high school.

Construction Commencing.  The week of Monday, February 8, 2016 will mark the beginning of construction at the LCHS campus.  A gymnasium and stoa will be added to the facility.  Perimeter fencing will go up first.  The fence will slice through the parking lot eliminating approximately 13 spaces and some curb space around the school.  Heavy construction is targeted to begin on February 15th.  Olympia Hall will be inaccessible throughout construction.

Traffic Chaos.  The necessity of traffic-safety vigilance around the school should be obvious to everyone and taken very seriously by all. With the start of high-school construction in February, we'll be losing approximately 13 parking spots in our parking lot and some perimeter curb space due to construction traffic and curbside staging of construction equipment and materials.  Additionally, there are coincidental construction projects occurring across the street from the school to the south, and another to our east.  Drop-off and pickup traffic will unavoidably become more chaotic and treacherous.  Prepare to park further from the school building, and prepare to arrive earlier.  Timberline Church has donated 60 parking spots to LCHS-bound motorists throughout the duration of our construction project.  Student drivers are encouraged to park there.  CLICK HERE for a refresher on our LCHS drop-off and pickup protocols and guidance. Please be careful everyone.  If you are part of the Timberline Church community, please know how grateful LCHS is for the neighborly hospitality and assistance we continually receive from your Church, and thank you.

News from Business Manager, Katrina Brossia

A big thank you to everyone that has either sent in a check or went online to contribute to the Capital Campaign. The outcome has been extremely positive as we have raised over 1/3rd of the amount needed to purchase the furniture, fixtures, and equipment that are needed for the expanded multi-purpose area, gymnasium, and in the fitness/weight room but we still have a way to go.

News from the Assistant-Principal, Mr. Lovely

Alumni Update from Agnes Mpanga of Tanzania - LCHS foreign-exchange student (2011-12) now attending the University of Dar es Salaam in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Hello.  I hope that you are having a good Christmas season. I am doing well. Last May, I completed my high-school studies and I thank God that I passed with a G.P.A of 3.3.  I got a chance to attend the mandatory national services for the army in Tanzania called JKT.  It was fine and fun, and I enjoyed it.  I am currently at the University of Dar es Salaam taking courses toward a bachelor of science with geology.  The university life is a new challenge but I am handling it well.  This is my first semester and my first time to live in a big city of Dar.
I miss you all and thank you for all the support, love and for everything during my exchange year at Liberty Common High School.
Agnes

Skiving Defined. Liberty's ninth-hour options are a great opportunity for students to get extra help in their studies.  Students falling behind in their grades may be required by their instructors to attend 9th-hour study clubs, or zero-hour (morning) study sessions.  Such students who are required to attend, but fail to show up for these sessions will be given a conduct violation.  The proper term for skipping these supplemental study sessions is skiving.  If you see this new category in a homeward violation notice, it means your student has skipped something he or she was required to attend at school.  "Skiving" also applies to failures to show up for lunchtime ransom duty and detentions.
