Classical Manners for the Modern Youth
From the 1934 high-school textbook Good Manners used in "Household Science" class of that day:

"Rule No. 163.  Decorum (On The Train).  When boys and girls travel on a train, they must remember that those who attract attention to themselves do not prove to be desirable acquaintances.  Usually such people are inexperienced travelers, or are unfamiliar with good manners.

"One of the abominations of train travel is the person who gets acquainted with everyone, who tells his life history, acts the clown up and down the aisles, and tries to draw you into an intimate friendship.

"Plan to take reading material so that you can amuse yourself.  Do not feel that you must entertain those seated with you.

"Students in groups going to and from school, sometimes sing or play the ukulele on the train, and are forgiven because they are students.  They should be careful that they are not annoying an invalid*, or a baby, or are overtaxing the good nature of the other people in the car.  One or two young people should avoid attracting the attention of the whole coach."

(*Students:  This archaic term is nowadays considered an inappropriate reference.)

   Newsworthy Notices

Mental-Health Matters.  A parent- and community-education event is being held this Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Poudre High School (PHS) entitled "Mental Health Matters."  The event is open to the public and covers mental-health topics including anxiety, body image, depression, self-harm, substance abuse, grief, and more.  PHS is located at 201 Impala Dr., in Fort Collins.  CLICK HERE for more information.

Financial-Aid Night. Make plans to join us on Monday, December 7th, 6:30-8:30PM in the Great Hall for "The Ins and Outs of Financial Aid and Preparing the FAFSA," presented by Eleni Beaty, Colorado State University Office of Student Financial Services. All student and parents (grades 7-12) are welcome to attend.

Shakespeare Auditions. Auditions for the LCHS Shakespeare play are on January 7th or 8th from 3:30-5:00 pm in Washington Hall. Choose one audition date and sign up outside Mrs. Scarlett's classroom. Please wear comfortable clothes, bring your availability up to the April 29th and 30th performances, and be prepared to do some scenes from Shakespeare. If you'd like to prepare a monologue from a Shakespeare play it is highly encouraged but will not directly affect casting. I am looking for students who are available to rehearse two days a week from 3:30-5:00 and occasionally on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon as the performance approaches. You must be available for the performances on April 29th and 30th and attend tech rehearsals every day after school April 25th-28th.

A note from Mrs. Scarlett: This production will be very "outside the box" and with your participation it will be a great success. The theme is "The Life of the Mind" and we'll be devising our own work using scenes, monologues, and soliloquies from many Shakespeare plays but all relating to imagination, ideas, thoughts, and the elusive life of the mind. If you are cast you will be given the role of a company member and fully participate in the creation of the production. As a company member you will read and research several characters and plays, analyze speeches, and help write interstitial text to form our performance piece. The first few weeks will focus on vocal training, physical theatre, acting exercises, and building a cohesive goal as a company. The next two months will be spent working on scenes and monologues so the rehearsal schedule will vary at that point depending on your level of involvement. All actors will be onstage for the entire performance so company trust and support is crucial. Sets will be minimalist, costumes understated, and presentation will be quite meta. I will explain the concept more and answer any questions at auditions. Bonne chance.

  History of Liberty Common School

Liberty Common School has a unique history that is important for all to know. There were many hardships and roadblocks encountered along the way. The Founders persevered to make our school what it is today, but it wasn't easy. We are fortunate to have had such persistent pioneers with a vision to make one of the best charter schools in Colorado.

Last week we ran Part One of "The History of Liberty Common High School" by Mrs. Michelle Provaznik and LCHS Principal Bob Schaffer, founding parents. This week, we are publishing the latest chapter of our Liberty story. Our hope is that by sharing our history, we will better value the efforts by our Founders to get where we are today. It is because of their vision and foresight that we have the top elementary and high school in the state of Colorado.

We continually thank our founding parents for their hard work and dedication. We could not have asked for a better educational system to educate children. Our hope is that you feel the same.

The History of Liberty Common High School
By: Mrs. Michelle Provaznik and Principal Bob Schaffer (Founding Parents)

(continued from last Monday)
The school would offer a classical, liberal-arts curriculum building upon the
Director of the Elementary School, Casey Churchill organized the move from LCS to LCHS and the expansion at LCS. It was an enormous undertaking of brilliant coordination.
Core Knowledge Sequence. It would accentuate the humanities, and excel in math, science and engineering. Committees of parents were convened to further refine the curriculum and the course schedules.

Public meetings were held to describe the school, its goals and plans. Administrators described the kinds of teachers they envisioned hiring and who from the current school would go to the high-school building. A relaxed high-school Dress Code was developed and elated ninth graders were allowed to try it out for their last semester at the old Liberty Elementary School.

The House System was developed. Ninth and eighth graders who had committed to attending LCHS were assigned to one of three Houses: Domus Scientiae, Domus Virtutis or Domus Prudentiae. They began working on House projects such as House crests, logos, mottos and events.

Still, one question loomed over all of these discussions and activities: Where would the new high school be located? Hopes for a high-school property adjacent to the current school were fading. Visions of a single Liberty campus were becoming dim. All options considered had turned into dead ends. The school was now well into 2010 - the year the high school was scheduled to open, but there was still no building in hand.

One mile south of the elementary school stood a building that had been occupied by a defunct charter high school for a few years and had been abandoned for a few more years since. Would that building work?

Peter Kast approached the building's owners, and obtained a key allowing the Board to wander through the dusty vacant facility. After the walkthrough, the Board huddled in the parking lot looking on the abandoned school as the winter sun set over its roof. The group began mulling numbers and options. If the price came down, with some remodeling, and with additional classroom expansion over a few more years, this location could work. The Board decided to pursue the building at 2745 Minnesota Drive, and to continue searching for other options.

LCHS opened under the guidance of Director of Secondary Schools Bob Schaffer who was soon after named school principal by the Liberty Board of Directors.
It quickly became apparent the poor economy stressing Liberty's finances was simultaneously working to the school's advantage as a buyer of an abandoned building in a slow real-estate market. The price of the building was, by the week, dropping further below its original asking price. With the help of an investment corporation FCCS, LLC, headed up by local developer and charter-school backer Troy McWhinney, a solution materialized allowing Liberty Common School to lease the building and purchase it a few years later.

Tenancy stretched the Liberty budget to its limit, but the numbers added up - barely. With solid enrollment and aggressive fundraising among the parent community, the Board believed it could make ends meet.

A Letter of Intent was signed in February of 2010. Once an agreement was finalized, the landlord opened the building right away so parents could take a tour. From that moment, excitement punctuated all the work and countless hours required to get the building ready to open by August 18th of 2010.

Teachers needed to be hired. After attending numerous job fairs and accepting applications from literally around the world, a first-rate team of LCHS educators was assembled.

The high school's roster of inaugural instructors was announced: Jared Dybzinski, Dr. Charles Hubbeling, Dawn Karr, Marques Kem, William Kranz, Kay Lannen, Jerry Lavin, Torgun Lovely, Duane Staton, Dr. Barbara Werner, Ken Vetter, Sarah Aguilar-Francis, Megan Ellis, Connie Logsdon, Dave Lunn, Susan Porter, Donny Reeves, Wade Torgeson and Erin Voorhies.

Chairman of the Colorado State Board of Education, former U.S. Congressman and State Senator, and founding parent Bob Schaffer, who had been hired as project manager for the high-school expansion, was named Director of Secondary Schools, and later Principal. Along with Liberty's headmaster, the school's new administration would direct the opening and operation of Liberty Common High School.

Architects and contractors worked feverishly throughout the summer remodeling the building. The administration shopped at auctions for used school furnishings and equipment. New lockers - cherry red ones - were ordered and would eventually line the empty hallways. New lunchroom tables were ordered, too. There was no turning back now. LCHS would open on time with its leading class of 10th graders. In three years, these pioneering students would become Liberty's first graduating class - the inaugural Class of 2013.

The night before LCHS was set to open, students grades 7 - 10 came together at Liberty Elementary School for the last time. Elementary Principal Casey Churchill lit a ceremonial lantern that was carried by students at the head of a 2.2-mile long procession along the Poudre River then West up to the high ground upon which Liberty Common High School sits. This was Liberty's first "Torch Trek," which has been reenacted by Liberty students every year since.

High School Sports
D1 Athlete -Liberty Common has its first Division-one college athlete.  Congratulations to Eva Morrison who is running for Baylor University.  Morrison runs the 100m hurdles.  Her love of running followed her to Texas and she found it difficult to hang up her shoes.  Morrison asserted herself and scouted out the track coaches.  They worked with her high- school times and put her in an off-season training program that made her stronger and faster.  Because of her added academic strength, Baylor gave her an additional $8000 a year.  Great job, Eva! Go Bears!

LCHS has never had three levels of basketball for its woman's program, until this year.  There were enough girls that came out for basketball this year that Coach Ukasick decided to keep them all and add a 'C' team.  The athletic director quickly made a schedule and added a 'Round Robin' on January 30th to give the girls a season.  Coach Ukasick is building a strong program together with his staff.  If there are any other high-school females that want to 'get in on the ground floor' and are interested in learning the game of basketball, now is your chance.  There is room for a couple more girls interested in giving basketball a try.  If you are interested, contact Coach Ukasick at: lchsgbb@gmail.com.

LCHS Alumni Update from Sarah Schaffer (LCHS '15) now attending Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona

Hello Liberty Family!

I'm enjoying the warm environs of Grand Canyon University (GCU) and being a "Lope" (short for antelope - the GCU mascot), but missing everyone back home at LCHS - especially my sister Mary (LCHS Class of 2019) and her grumpy principal. I'm majoring in biology and in a pre-physician-assistant program, and working for the university doing lab setups for extra income. I have also become a successful math entrepreneur.

It turns out there are lots of graduates from other high schools who are not great at math. These are my new clients. They pay me to help them with their college homework and it's pretty easy - $10 per homework assignment - it takes me no time at all. We're talking high-school algebra. I'm not even kidding. A lot of the kids in college struggle with it. Thank you Mr. Lovely, Mrs. Lannen and Mrs. McAllister! To be honest, I didn't think your classes were that much fun when I took them; but now I realize how well you taught us. And who knew there's money in math?!

Also, Mrs. Karr rocks! Biology at LCHS was pretty hard and she was a demanding teacher, but I learned what she taught and it prepared me well - really well. So far, biology in college is pretty difficult, yet I am ready for it. I've got solid background knowledge, I know how to study hard, and I'm helping others in my classes. One college course I definitely don't recommend: Psychology. This class seems to be a lot about feelings and doesn't entail much actual knowledge. I do get compliments about my writing and the great books I've read. So big-time props to the LCHS English department. I got so tired of hearing my dad say (like a million times), "The hard way through high school is the easy way through college." But now, I think he was kind of right about that (I love you dad!).

Finally, I actually appreciate the LCHS capstones and rely on them all the time. Many kids in college don't have a strong moral foundation, but having those LCHS capstones in my face for five years, plus the foundation stones since kindergarten has given me some wisdom to know what is right and proper, and given me a frame of reference to know what to do in situations.

I've got five roommates and they're awesome. I'm also loving going to college with Jessica Schwindt (LCHS '14) and Julia Book (LCHS '15). We're all keeping busy with intramural sports, especially volleyball - it's like old times playing with my LCHS volleyball teammates. I also like the 120-degree summer days. My dorm has a swimming pool - yeah!

Do I miss the LCHS Dress Code? Absolutely not! We can wear flip-flops to school here and all the heather fabric we want - and floral! I love getting letters from home, but I never have stamps to write back.  Mr. Staton taught me how to save money in the LCHS personal-finance course, so I'm doing that. So if you want to write me a letter, send a stamped return envelope and I'll write you back right away. Otherwise, it may take me some time - but I will definitely write back! Here's my address: 3300 Camelback Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85017, ATTN: #13997.

I hope everyone has a happy Thanksgiving and Christmas, and I can't wait to see my Liberty friends and your super-old gray-haired principal when I come home for the holidays! Oh, and don't forget: Ad Altiora! That's just for you Mr. Kem and Dr. Werner.

Go Eagles!
Sarah Schaffer

Sarah demonstrating why you should think twice about making fun of your "super-old gray-haired," and "grumpy" principal who happens to have tons more pics where this one came from.
I love you, too, sweetie-pie!

   News Worth Repeating

Korean sister-school students from GyeSeong Girls School in Seoul visited LCHS last February.  Five more are coming this February and need host families for eighteen days.
Short-Term Host Families Needed. Five female high-school students from our Korean sister school are coming to Fort Collins.  We need three host families to take them in from February 8th to February 25th.   Last year, LCHS formalized a sister-school relationship with Seoul-based GyeSeong Girls School.  At that time, six GyeSeong students visited Fort Collins and spent a few days shadowing students at LCHS.  It was a fantastic time.  Our students were sad when it was time for them to return home.  If interested in hosting, please email Andrea Heyman.

Reading Room. We are wanting to finish out our reading room to a comfortable place where students can step away from life's demands unwind with a good book. If you have great shape-leather chairs, wing-back, or pub style, a large table measuring 8 feet, decor to add character to the shelves, please consider a donation. Monetary gifts are also welcome. Please submit pictures of the items to donate to Mrs. Shafer in the front office. Pictured is the look we're shooting for.

Booster-Club Committee Forming. If you have any interest in athletics and are considering deepening your support for the school by volunteering, may I suggest joining the LCHS Booster Club?  This is a parent-run club that is very instrumental in the success of our athletic programs.  There is a lot of work that has been put into this club, but most of the weight has been carried by a very small few.  Our vision is to build the LCHS Booster Club to a number of people that would make the work light.  Being at every athletic contest is not required.  Members can go to the games or events that interest them....and free of charge.  Thank you for considering this opportunity.  If you are interested, contact LCHS Booster Club President, Rebecca Finkel

Athletic-Fee Information.  There is a family cap of $600 per school year.  This includes jr-high and high-school participation.  Play two sports? The third one is free.

Brand New Convenience. We now accept payment by credit/debit cards.  You can conveniently pay your athletic fees online on a financially secure website called CheddarUp.  Start now by clicking HERE.  Just click on the sport of participation and pay.   If you have already paid the athletic fee for basketball, I will enter your method of payment on the site and you will receive a receipt from CheddarUp.
