Team members are 9th grader David Rohrbaugh and 7th graders Michael Hofinger, Taylor Reinke, Joshua Rohrbaugh, and Mikey Werst; coaches are Liberty parents John and Janelle Rohrbaugh.
Liberty On Front Page. The front page of last Thursday's Coloradoan newspaper (a daily publication distributed mainly in Fort Collins) featured a story about Liberty Common School and the 1,600 families on the school's lottery list hoping to get their kids into the school. As the school's population continues to swell, enrollment for the next school year is at capacity in grades k-10. This leaves numbers on our lottery list reaching levels we haven't seen in about a decade. CLICK HERE to link to the story about the high demand for Liberty's education program and the general demand for charter schools in northern Colorado.

Three LCHS students were honored for academic excellence last Wednesday by the Fort Collins Masonic Lodge. The three honorees are senior Tim Scott (Legio XIII), 8th grader Perry Nielsen, and senior Anna Garcia.
| Masonic Accolades. Local Masons associated with the Fort Collins Masonic Lodge recognized three LCHS students last Wednesday evening at a large ceremony in the temple's main hall. Students from throughout our region were recognized for academic excellence. Among them were LCHS 8th grader Perry Nielsen, senior Anna Garcia, and senior Tim Scott (Legio XIII). On hand for the ceremony were parents, both Liberty principals, Mr. Bill Kranz and Mr. Jared Dybzinski, the PSD superintendent and two members of the PSD Board of Education - in addition to lots of Masonic officers.
Congressman/Candidate On Deck Today. One of four GOP candidates for Colorado governor, Congressman Bob Beauprez, is making a campaign swing through Fort Collins and asked to stop by the school to look around, take a tour, and shake some hands. Students will have a chance to meet the Congressman and pepper the candidate with questions during today's 9th-hour club time. Any parents wanting to drop by and sit in on the exchange are welcome The gathering is in Dr. Robinson's classroom (256) between 2:45 and 3:15PM today. Additionally, we'll roll the camera and post a video link for the visit here in next week's edition of Monday Notes.

A mighty team of LCHS instructors competed in, and completed, the Colorado Marathon on Saturday, May 3rd. Smiling after the finish line are teachers Kay Lannen (math/engineering), Dawn Karr (science), Jeremy Tullius (English), Elizabeth Ogg (music), John McNulty (economics/history) and Dean of Academics Sandy Stoltzfus.

Good Art Up. Parents should take a few minutes to see the 7th-grade mixed-media abstract paintings Mr. Rex Seiple has put on display in the LCHS hallways. The new student artworks are based on their studies of Kandinsky, Mondrian, and Malevich. According to Mr. Seiple, "The students started by drawing a realistic drawing of good versus evil. The students' ideas of good versus evil ranged from serious metaphorical images like light v. dark to more humorous such as broccoli v. cheese. They then developed their ideas into abstract works where balance and formal aesthetics were the primary concern."
Provaznik Named All-Star. According to LCHS senior and School Captain Wade Provaznik, LCHS Latin instructor Mr. Kem has the greatest hair he's ever seen. You can watch Provaznik say it for yourself. The Coloradoan newspaper, last Thursday, featured Provaznik as an Academic All-Star. The standout student was recognized at a citywide ceremony Thursday evening where the video was first unveiled. CLICK HERE to see a related news story about Provaznik, and to find the link to the inspiring video. Congratulations Wade on your many all-star accomplishments! - and to Mr. Kem on your fabulous coiffure!
Open Campus. Wednesday, May 7th, 2014 is an "Open Campus" day. Juniors and seniors are privileged to leave the school grounds for lunch between 10:36 and 11:25AM.

LCHS 8th grader Mary Schaffer got accepted to West Point's summer STEM workshop and leaves for the United States Military Academy in June. She's pictured here demonstrating why it's not a great idea to swipe your father's iPhone and load it up with weird photos of yourself - especially when your dad is also your school's principal. You never know where digital images might end up; so you might want to keep that in mind kids.

Summer At West Point. Congratulations to LCHS 8th grader Mary Schaffer who got accepted to the United States Military Academy's summer Science, Technology, Engineering & Math Workshop at West Point. Schaffer ships off in early June for a week of academic and physical challenges designed to give students an idea of what Academy life is like and to learn what it takes to become a U.S. Army officer. The nationwide competition for a spot in this workshop is pretty fierce, so getting one is an impressive feat. HOOAH!

It's simple...we like simple! To keep it simple we collect donations, pool our money, and stretch our dollars for maximum impact. We use the collected funds to buy two things: LUNCH & GIFT CARDS - very simple! In order to subsidize those 2 expenses our collection goal this year is $2,000, which translates (simply) to $5/LCHS student. (1 student = $5) Of course, all donations are strictly voluntary and not expected; we're just trying to simplify the process.
WAYS TO PARTICIPATE:
1) Send your monetary contribution (envelope included for simplicity!) to the LCHS office by Friday, May 2nd. (Please make checks payable to LCHS) 2) Go to our Signup Genius to view a list of small, tangible needs that can be sent to school with your child. Nice and simple! www.SignUpGenius.com/go/30E0F4FAFA82CA02-teacher 3) Or you can choose to do both!

Medication Pick-up
| Parents, please pick up all medications from the health office starting today. For the safety of your children, the following procedure will be in place:
A. No medications will be sent home with students. All medications must be picked up by parents by the last day of the school year (including emergency or "as needed" medications, such as Epi-pens, Tylenol, and inhalers).
B. If you need to pick up your child's medication before the last day of school, the needed number of pills may be counted out and kept at school in the original container. You may take the remaining pills home in a plastic bag.
C. Any medications not picked up by the last day of school will be disposed of by the school nurse, according to state guidelines. We will no longer make reminder phone calls.
We hope everyone will understand this procedure is important for safeguarding your children. (Please pick up the medications between 7:15 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.) If you have any questions, please contact Susan Groeger at 672-5503 or sgroeger@libertycommon.org.

Kindergarten Ms. Pinky First Grade Mr. Zucarelli Second Grade Mrs. Schmidt Third Grade Mr. Zucarelli Fourth Grade Mrs. Rose Fifth Grade Mr. Smidt Sixth Grade Mrs. Chism There are a lot of people I can't remember. Or, I should say, there are a lot of people whose names I can't remember. I can see a face but no name. I do however know the names of all my elementary school teachers (see above). I would bet that most of you can too. Strange since our schooling took place was so long ago. This is testament to the impact our teachers have on our children. Teachers mean the world to our kids during this crucial time of educational growth.
Teacher Appreciation week is a time to recognize all the great work our teachers do to prepare our students for the academic rigor that lies ahead. Thanks so much to the parent volunteers for decorating the hallways and providing the treats throughout the week. I can tell by the brilliant bulletin boards, the fantastic food, and the smiles from ear to ear that our community appreciates our teachers. Teachers have one of the hardest and most demanding jobs. We cannot thank them enough for their dedication to educate and motivate our youth. Schools all across America celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week as this is a nationally recognized week. The history of National Teacher Appreciation Week is uncertain, but the movement for such an observance is commonly thought to have begun around the time of World War II. Eleanor Roosevelt made a major push for the day in 1953. National Teacher Day was later declared in 1980 by Congress and in 1985 the Parent Teacher Association established National Teacher Week as the first week of May. It has been celebrated annually ever since. Our country places high importance on the teaching profession and so do we. Liberty is fortunate to have such high quality teachers. We expect the best and they deliver. There is plenty of research in the educational arena about how student's best succeed. Some believe it is dependent on the class sizes, others believe teaching technology is the missing piece, and others believe eating healthy will cause students to succeed. Here at Liberty, it is our belief that placing your students in front of educated and hardworking teachers is the core to an incredible education. Our teachers plan their lessons in detail, work with their teammates, read books to better their understanding of content, develop and grade homework and assessments, analyze test data, work with students one on one until they understand the content taught, communicate successes and challenges to parents, attend after-school events, put Band-Aids on scraped knees, and motivate children to do their best. A teacher must be a jack-of-all-trades. We thank our dedicated staff for educating, motivating, and ensuring a positive future of our youth. I can no other answer make, but, thanks, and thanks. Exploring College Options is a special recruitment program sponsored by the undergraduate admissions offices of five of the country's leading universities: Duke University, Georgetown University, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Stanford University. At each event, representatives from the five universities will conduct brief slide presentations about their institution and answer your questions about the sometimes-mystifying world of college admissions. You will learn what distinguishes one fine university from another, what competitive colleges look for in the selection process, and what you can do to enhance your college application.

Summer Programs and Resources
Enrichment Alley How you spend your summers can influence your admission to college. While summer activities will not compensate for mediocre grades and poor test scores, careful planning can tip the scales in your favor. Let's look at the kinds of experiences that can make a difference.
Colleges across the U.S. offer summer programs for high school students. In some cases, students take regular college summer courses for credit alongside college students, and participate fully in campus life. Often, the high school students live together in supervised dormitories, and participate in special activities and seminars designed for them. You can earn three to eight college credits in programs like those offered by institutions such as Harvard, Syracuse, Brandeis, Cornell, Brown, Ithaca College, and UC Santa Barbara... http://enrichmentalley.com/news/planning-for-a-productive-summer. Pre-college summer programs are a fantastic way for high school students to test drive college life, discover great new schools and find the colleges that best fit their individual needs.

Classical Manners for the Modern Youth | From the 1934 high-school textbook Good Manners used in "Household Science" class of that day:
"Rule No. 103. Toilet Accessories. Boys, never use perfume, scented soap, or odorous hair-lotions, because these scented toilet things are effeminate. Take care of your nails. Do not use your knife to pare your nails in public. Complete your toilet in private.
"Rule No. 104. Gloves. If a boy wears gloves, he removes them when he enters a home. He removes his right glove when he shakes hands."

News Worth Repeating
| All Students Expected At Graduation. The LCHS Graduation Ceremony is a unique event because it involves all high-school students. Graduates proceed into the auditorium with their Houses and are seated with their Houses. From there, House Deans "call the graduates out" of their Houses and onto the stage where they received customary honors. The symbolism of House inclusion and all-school participation is important as it underscores the school's philosophy and function as a single, comprehensive k-12 institution. Moreover, the ceremony is an inspiring celebration that should be witnessed by as many younger students as possible. It helps set a clear vision for them about the advantages attained through strenuous academic effort, and intellectual strength. Please plan on all students (current-year grades 8-12) attending LCHS's Second Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, May 24th at 11:30AM at Timberline Church. Houses assemble prior to the event. Each House will communicate its own meeting time, and any pre-ceremony activities it may be planning, directly to students. Please communicate any unavoidable absences to House Deans ahead of time for proper seating adjustments. There will be a reception for all in the LCHS Great Hall immediately after the Graduation Ceremony.
2014 Graduation: Saturday, May 24th, 11:30-1:00pm at Timberline Community Church, South Auditorium. Graduation at LCHS is an all-school event. All students, 8th-11th, planning to attend LCHS in 2014-15 expected to participate in the ceremony. Students will meet at Timberline Community Church at 11:00am and congregate with their Houses to participate in the graduation ceremony procession. Students will be seated with their Houses for this epic event.
Library Pal Applications Available. Part of the 2014 Summer Reading Program in Poudre River Public Library District is the Library Pals Volunteer program. Kids who have finished grade 5, 6, 7, or 8 can apply to be Library Pals. If accepted, they'll receive training and then work one two-hour shift a week during June and July, helping with all sorts of library tasks-straightening shelves, washing books, listening to younger kids read, suiting up as the library mascot, and much more. Applications will be available on line at: http://read.poudrelibraries.org/kids/ or at any of the three libraries and will be accepted through May 16, 2014. Since a limited number of positions are available, the sooner an application is turned in, the better the chances for placement. For more information, phone 221-6740.
Yearbook Deadline. Yearbooks arrive early in May and are distributed during Eagles Game Day. Go to www.jostensyearbook.com to order. We have had a wonderful, exciting time with this year's book. You are going to love it! Enjoy. Have a great rest of the year.
Traffic Volunteers Needed. There have been a couple of minor auto accidents reported recently near the high school during the high-traffic intervals of morning dropoff and afternoon pickup. One incident involved a motorists trying to avoid an erratic student-pedestrian who changed direction amid a street crossing. One parent has suggested the need for adults to be out during these times assisting student-pedestrians as they cross streets to and from the school property. To volunteer, please drop by the school at the relevant times or call ahead to the front office to make arrangements. Please grab and return one of the five traffic-safety vests we keep near the front doors of the school.
More Driver Safety Needed. Due to the recent mishaps mentioned above, please mind our regular weekly requests to arrive at the school earlier in the morning in order to spread out the drop-off traffic and to ease peak congestion. Also, please make certain elementary-age students are met by competent adults when they are dropped off by the afternoon bus at the high school.

Host A Foreign-Exchange Student. There are many foreign-exchange students wanting to come to LCHS in the next school year. We review students' English fluency scores and grades from their home countries before sharing their names here for the consideration of potential Liberty host families. All that is needed now for these kids to experience a year at our school is a family to host them. You can sign up to host for six weeks (a "welcome family"), the whole school year, or some fraction in between. For example, Thea from Norway, pictured nearby, is 16 years old and would like to attend LCHS next year. She loves spending time with her family, friends, and her poodle named Pia. She describes herself as an "honest and kind person, and I can't wait to meet you." If interested, please contact Thea's program coordinator Melissa at 303-847-8165. The following foreign-exchange students are coordinated by The Council for Educational Travel USA (CETUSA). These students arrive with $250 a month spending money, and health insurance.
