The Pioneer Institute, last week, released the second of two videos explaining why the new Common Core State Standards are destructive to American education.
| Understand "Common Core" Debate. Liberty parents need to know what's behind the new debate on "Common Core State Standards." Much has been written about them in the Monday Notes, and much more will be. Liberty's Board of Directors recently passed a resolution in opposition to the Common Core standards citing concerns about the new costly mandates and the low academic expectations they represent. Common Core is very different than "Core Knowledge." The Colorado Department of Education has regrettably embraced Common Core. The Poudre School District is implementing Common Core for all PSD schools. Nonetheless, debate rages in these quarters, and across the country, as this radical experiment marches forward. The Colorado State Senate Education Committee recently considered a bill to delay Colorado's implementation of Common Core for a year. Liberty's Resolution was specifically mentioned as a part of the Senate's debate. Ridgeview officially opposes Common Core, and so do many other charter schools. Moreover, a handful of states have opted out of Common Core including Texas, Virginia, Alaska and Nebraska. Please click on the nearby video link to watch the second of two expository videos produced by the Massachusetts-based Pioneer Institute which describes why Liberty prefers proven academic strategies over the nationalized and unorthodox experimentation of Common Core.
Volunteers Needed for the 2014 Graduation Reception. We are looking for a group of junior parents to carry on the tradition of coordinating Graduation Reception. It was a simply wonderful event last year coordinated by Pam Belleville, Ruth Lanciotti, and Jamie Knab. Any junior parents interested in volunteering should contact Mrs. Stoltzfus by March 28th. "My oldest daughter graduated last year. Graduation weekend was a busy time for the parents of Seniors as we planned parties, hosted family and friends, and focused on our graduating students. I was so thankful for the beautiful reception that was planned by the parents of LCHS Juniors and Sophomores. The reception gave the opportunity for students to socialize with their families, their teachers, and with each other before we all scrambled for different graduation parties. Hopefully, we can keep this tradition going. Currently, my daughter Elizabeth, is a Junior, and I am one of the parents who plans to volunteer with this year's reception. Please consider helping out. You will be happy and thankful next year when your student is graduating." - Annie Yeh
Taxonomy of Aesthetics. The next Liberty Lecture will focus on art and will take place on Tuesday, March 25th from 6:30 - 7:30PM in the LCHS Great Hall. Attendees will learn about various classifications of art, artistic relationships and art appreciation. LCHS instructors Megan Ellis and Rex Seiple will walk the audience through key characteristics of classical and modern art, providing commentary on art history, appreciation and theory. They will also underscore the intensity of art instruction in the Core Knowledge Sequence. The pair provided a preview at a recent LCHS staff meeting, which was received by the faculty and administration with great enthusiasm. As with all Liberty Lectures, this interesting lesson is open tents alike.

Yep, you guessed it, Latin. Latin is far from dead in the English Language. In fact, it is very much alive and well all around us. True, we are not used to speaking formal Latin in our everyday language, but the influence of Latin on our English vocabulary is abundant. Latin provides us access to thousands of rich and nuanced words. Latin is the root for 90% of the English words with more than one syllable and is the foundation for Romance languages.
One of Liberty's goals is to increase our student's knowledge and understanding of English. To do this, we teach Latin in grades K-7. Kindergarten through 3rd grade in the classroom, 4th through 6th in a specials class taught 2 times a week for 45 minutes, and all 7th grade students take Latin 1. After their 7th grade year, students have the background knowledge to continue their study of Latin or branch out and try another language: French or Spanish. Latin provides the necessary framework to understand these foreign languages.
Liberty has seen incredible gains with our students' vocabulary throughout the years with our increased focus on Latin. Our students are prepared to take any ACT or SAT tests, they are prepared to learn a wide variety of foreign languages, and they are prepared to dissect any unknown English words. Latin provides our students with the tools to systematically break down words to understand their meaning.
We treat Latin just like we would Math. Math is orderly, logical, and cumulative where each skill builds on the previous one. We see Latin in the same context. Students learn basic Latin roots as building blocks to understanding the English language. But Latin is more than a language, it is a discipline. Decoding instills logical and precise thought. Like math, it provides invaluable experience of studying one systematic subject to mastery.
This last week our 3rd through 6th grade students took the Exploratory Latin Exam and this week Latin 1-4 and AP Latin (grades 7-12) students take the National Latin Exam. Each year our students take these tests to show all that they have learned. These assessments provide us with valuable data to adjust and make improvements with our instruction. The study of Latin has proven to be a beneficial component of the curriculum we teach here at Liberty. Liberty High School students have had the highest ACT scores in the state for two years running. We are continually impressed with the value of teaching this alive and well language. Latin, it does our English good.

Classical Manners for the Modern Youth | From the 1934 high-school textbook Good Manners used in "Household Science" class of that day:
"Rule No. 90. Hands. Manicured nails and clean hands are basic requirements for a well-dressed girl. To manicure in public is just as unforgivable as to brush your teeth in public. Avoid a high polish and a freaky shape for the nails. Each girl determines the shape of nail best suited for her own hand. "Rule No. 91. Undergarments. Proper underclothes protect the outer garments from danger of stain and from perspiration. They must be easily washed and kept in repair. Be careful that shoulder-straps are clean, fresh, and in place. Never allow them to be exposed."

Traffic Volunteers Needed. There have been a couple of minor auto accidents reported recently near the high school during the high-traffic intervals of morning dropoff and afternoon pickup. One incident involved a motorists trying to avoid an erratic student-pedestrian who changed direction amid a street crossing. One parent has suggested the need for adults to be out during these times assisting student-pedestrians as they cross streets to and from the school property. To volunteer, please drop by the school at the relevant times or call ahead to the front office to make arrangements. Please grab and return one of the five traffic-safety vests we keep near the front doors of the school.
More Driver Safety Needed. Due to the recent mishaps mentioned above, please mind our regular weekly requests to arrive at the school earlier in the morning in order to spread out the drop-off traffic and to ease peak congestion. Also, please make certain elementary-age students are met by competent adults when they are dropped off by the afternoon bus at the high school.
