MOMENT OF INSPIRATION The interior design power house known as Dorothy Draper first came into the world in 1889. Draper went on to inspire a splendid new style in design that is as punchy and fresh as it is anti-minimalistic. Though Draper had no formal schooling, her natural sense of taste and class, her extensive travel in Europe, and her insatiable spirit for experimentation made her a force to be reckoned with in the design world. Draper became widely known for her fearless use of bright colors and bold patterns and prints that would oftentimes encompass entire floors or walls. January is a time of fresh beginnings, full of resolution and potential. Few spaces express this sense of energy quite so well as Dorothy Draper's incredible lobby, located in the prestigious Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. Reportedly, upon first viewing the space, she imperiously declared it, "a Brobdingnagian monster of a bowling alley." Affronted yet intrigued, the Hotel's president engaged Draper to refurbish the lobby. What he got in return was an explosion of personality, style, and class.
