This issue continues our discussion on palmistry, and the relationship between crystals and hand types. We're also going to take a look at how crystals can help you survive "Astrological Bad Weather."

If you haven't registered yet for the  2016 Hoodoo Heritage Festival, time is running out, so be sure to do so soon! I'll be presenting a workshop there called "The Four Branches of Crystal Magic: Scrying, Projection, Reception, and Transformation." It will be on the spiritual use of gemstones, and during the workshop I'll be introducing my new book on working with crystals and crystal balls, called "Crystal Magic: Divination, Healing, and Spellcraft with Gems and Minerals."  Hope to see you there!

Palmistry 101
 Jon Saint Germain
Last month we took a look at the
Water Hand. This month we continue our discussion of Palmistry by looking at the Fire Hand.

The Fire Hand
Fire Hands have short fingers, denoting impatience, with a long palm, indicating their vast reserves of emotional energy. The Fire Hand is usually hot to the touch. People with this hand type are passionate and intense. They love change and variety, and become easily bored with tedious work. They hate restrictions, limitations or falling into a rut.

A person with a Fire Hand possesses strong desires, appetites and ambition. Great starters, they seldom finish their projects, especially if the work takes too long. They become inflamed with an idea but are short on the patience to see it through. For example, they will often start novels, screenplays or home improvements, but often leave them unfinished. This is because they become bored if something takes too long to finish and rush off to begin a new project! Fire types and Earth types work well together; the Fire person starts the project and turns it over to the Earth person, who finishes it.

Fire is ambitious, and the Fire element, if too strong, can make the person greedy and power-hungry. A Fire hand with a tempering element of Earth or Water is ideal. Fire types have to be reminded how their actions affect others. Otherwise their ambition can cause them to run over other people on their way to their goal.

Fire can only burn so long. Addicted to intense action, Fires types will frequently crash after a period of strenuous activity. They can accomplish a great deal in a short amount of time, though.

Fire types should seek their soul mates among other Fire types who share similar goals, or among the imaginative Air person, whom they see as a constant source of stimulation. Water isn't a fortunate element for them, as Water smothers Fire. Earth tends to be a bit too stable to hold a Fire's attention for long.

Since Fire types can benefit from grounding, focus, and increased empathy and "stick-to-it-ness," an excellent crystal medicine bag could contain Fluorite, Hematite, Citrine, Lapis Lazuli, Obsidian, Clear Quartz, Sodalite, Tiger's Eye, and/or Malachite.

Surviving Astrological Bad Weather

Mercury or Venus Retrogrades are troublesome periods that can cause complex issues to disrupt the normal flow of our lives, usually at the worst possible times. Many people dread these passages, refusing to plan any serious activities until the retrograde passes.

What is a Retrograde?
As a planet orbits the sun, from our perspective on Earth it first appears to be traveling from left to right. As it circles the sun, it appears to us to be moving from right to left, in other words, backwards. Of course it isn't, it just appears that way from our point of view. This period of backward-seeming movement is called a retrograde.

What Happens During a Mercury Retrograde?
People fear a Mercury Retrograde because they anticipate all the terrible disruptions crashing into their lives. The planet Mercury rules travel, contracts, automobiles, sales, and everything else associated with communication. You might experience mental fogginess, communication misunderstandings, computer crashes at critical times, cell phone disruptions, contractual delays, delays in lawsuit or insurance settlements. Relationships and friendships can suffer due to misunderstandings and miscommunication. It's easy to take things the wrong way during a Mercury Retrograde.

When Mercury goes retrograde, panicking isn't advised. Try to plan against possible crises.  Give yourself extra time for travel, and if possible, avoid signing contracts. Try to delay making any final decisions or permanent commitments until after the retrograde is past.  A week before Mercury Retrogrades, finish any important tasks. Take care of any pending personal affairs. Even those who don't believe in Astrological influence are nevertheless affected by them, so prepare to deal with angry and frustrated people, be calm and patient, and expect misunderstandings to crop up often.

I advise my clients to take protective measures if an important event falls within the time frame of a retrograde. For example, if a court hearing, you may want to contract a rootworker for a Court Case working. If you're planning to give a sales pitch at work, communication work might be in order. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Can Crystals Help?
When most people think of stones in connection with a Mercury Retrograde, it's usually one the can hide under!  But there are a number of crystals that can help protect us through the difficulties that arise during a Mercury Retrograde.

Mercury Retrograde mainly affects the top three chakras, and it is among the crystals that resonate with these chakras that we  select our defenses.

To help with focus:
  • Citrine
  • Sodalite
  • Muscovite
For calm:
  • Blue Lace Agate
  • Celestine
  • Sugalite
To reduce stress:
  • Amethyst
  • Selenite
  • Lapidolite
To reduce anxiety and increase confidence:
  • Amazonite
  • Labradorite
For communication issues:
  • Blue Kyanite
  • Lapis Lazuli
To protect electronics:
  • Tektites
  • Silicon
  • Tungsten
For luck:
  • Sunstone
  • Amazonite
  • Aventurine
To absorb misfortune:
  • Green Tourmaline
When will Mercury Retrograde in 2016?
In 2016, Mercury will be retrograde during:
  • January 5 to 25
  • April 28 to May 22
  • August 30 to September 22
  • December 19 to 31
What About a Venus Retrograde?
Venus Retrograde mainly affects relationship situations. Its effects can be unpredictable. Old lovers can reappear from nowhere, current relationships can become troubled, you might reassess your relationship strategies and your emotional needs, and consider whole new approaches to every aspect of your life.

Emotions can run rampant, stirring up deeply-buried issues, so starting new relationships is inadvisable. Many relationships initiated during a Venus Retrograde begin impulsively, or out of neediness, and can end badly. Financial matters are also affected, so making major purchases is to be avoided, as impulse buying is a common occurrence during a Venus Retrograde.

Needless to say, family conflicts are magnified during this troublesome passage.

You may feel lost, lonely, and vulnerable. Venus in retrograde can put you face-to-face with many troubling emotional issues. It's important to be aware that what you're feeling may not be representative of your best and balanced self, and avoid making important, long-term decisions until the retrograde passes and you feel centered again.

When will Venus Retrograde in 2016?
Venus has a much longer orbital period than Mercury, and there will be no Venus retrograde for 2016.

What Crystals Can Help with a Venus Retrograde?
Venus Retrograde mainly affects the bottom four chakras, and it is among the crystals resonating with these chakras that we  select our defenses.

Impulsive behavior:
  • Angelite
  • Smoky Quartz
Grounding:
  • Black Obsidian
  • Wolframite
Healthy connection to others:
  • Yellow Smithsonite
  • Citrine
  • Yellow Scapulite
Past love issues:
  • Rose Quartz
  • Rhodochrosite
  • Pink Kyanite
Courage:
  • Tiger's Eye
  • Amazonite
You CAN Survive a Retrograde
As we see, we're not helpless during Astrological "Bad Weather." There are many defensive measures to call upon to assure our well-being during difficult times. As always, preparation is the key to success.
