Greetings!

With apologies for being late, another year begins. Have you made promises and set goals for 2016? Is this going to be the year for you? If so, I hope you find techniques in this newsletter to help you achieve your goals and overcome whatever obstacles stand in your way. Perhaps my goal shall be to get these newsletters out on time!

My only excuse is that I was busily occupied finishing my new book on Crystals and Crystal Balls in time for the upcoming 2016 Hoodoo Heritage Festival May 14th and 15th. If you haven't registered for this wonderful event, do so ASAP. I'll be presenting a workshop on the practical use of Crystals.  Hope to see you there!

Palmistry 101
 Jon Saint Germain
Some long time ago, a much younger me wrote three books on the subject of Palmistry for Llewellyn Publications. These were
Runic Palmistry, Karmic Palmistry,
and Palmistry for Lovers. All three are still available if you care to look them up. I received news recently that all three of these publications are available in e-book format.

Palmistry is a fast and fascinating way to glean insights into people you've just met, and can be a fun way to ease into practicing divination.

I'm going to say something that may surprise you. Palmistry isn't strictly a psychic ability like clairvoyance or seeing auras. It's really a form of character analysis based on certain features found in the hand. Anyone can learn to read palms after a fashion, but it helps if you're naturally empathetic and intuitive. After studying a few thousand hands the ability becomes ingrained into the subconscious. You stop reading hands and begin to read people. The best palm readers go beyond the hand and into the soul. Think of the hand as the gateway into the personality. Anyone can learn Palmistry, with or without psychic ability. If you happen to possess psychic talent, you can certainly add a deeper dimension to a hand reading, but it isn't a requirement.

On the other hand, I've known a number of clairvoyants who call themselves palm readers, but know nothing about the traditions of Palmistry. They'll hold a client's hand and spring into a clairvoyant or intuitive reading. There are "Tarot readers" who do this too, who don't know the difference between the Hermit and the Wheel of Fortune. The cards are basically props. I have mixed feelings about this practice. The readings may be good and useful, but Palmistry (and Tarology) are specific traditions, with accepted rules and disciplines, and if this is what you're professing, it seems to me this should be what you deliver.

In hand analysis, you must have a starting point. The most common question concerns which hand to read. Different schools have different approaches, and traditional Western Palmistry teaches that the dominant hand represents the present, while the subdominant hand is what you bring into the world -- the past. The subdominant hand can also be examined for karmic information, a topic I go into deeply in
Karmic Palmistry.

While many Palmists start with the major lines, I usually begin with the overall shape of the hand. This is because in advanced hand analysis, the type of hand nuances your interpretation of line patterns. In some Palmistry systems, there are as many as 300 distinct hand types, and I've studied most of them, but for practical purposes you can begin with the four basic hand shapes: The Earth, Fire, Water and Air Hands.

The EARTH HAND
The Earth hand is usually the easiest of the four types to recognize. The two qualities to look for are a square palm and short fingers. Usually the Earth hand contains very few lines, reflecting their preference for simplicity. If the fingers are rounded at the tips, the person may be a bit impatient. Square tips suggest a person who thinks before they act. The subject possessing an Earth hand will be practical, down-to-earth (naturally) reliable, predictable, emotionally stable and often conservative. The line patterns of these hands are usually very simple also, reflecting their simple and direct approach to life.

The Earth hand denotes a person who is fond of tradition. Their motto is "If it isn't broke, don't fix it." They possess a strong work ethic, are punctual, and tend to provide for the future. They neither lead nor follow, preferring to do things their own way in their own time. This hand type is often found on architects, craftsmen and designers. Earth types are usually fond of plants and animals. Think of the Earth when you see this hand. Mountains and trees tend to be stable and move slowly. The Earth is fertile, so this hand reveals an active interest in sex. Although the Earth type usually isn't the most passionate romantic, they are nurturing and supportive. For the person with an Earth Hand, relationships don't burn like fire, nor do they flow like water, but are sources of security and stability.

Earth types should look for their soul mates among other Earths and, sometimes, among the more stable Water types. They do not do well with Fire types, as the emotional intensity can scorch them. Also, Earths seem a bit boring to the intense Fire type.

Earth Hand Types have strong stability in the first three chakras, but may need help balancing and unblocking the upper four (Heart, Throat, Third Eye and Crown Chakras). To assist, they can make Crystal "Totem Bags" from Moss Agate, Amazonite, Sodalite, Amethyst, Iolite, and Smokey Quartz.
