Better late than...

We're running a bit late with our September issue due to busy scheduling and the realities of wearing many hats. Time passes quickly and it's Fall! Already the Pumpkin-Spice-Your-Life! trend has begun. The markets are packed with pumpkin spiced cookies, breads, coffees, teas, air fresheners, body spray, candles.  I swear the other day I was putting gas in my car and I thought it smelled vaguely of pumpkin spice!

In keeping with this trend, next month we'll talk about working with orange crystal balls. Until then--

The Sunny Side of the Street
You can't reach adulthood without recognizing the world is at times a difficult place to live. Finding happiness and peace of mind in an uncertain existence is admittedly a challenge. Yet we all know people who manage to maintain a cheerful, positive and optimistic outlook. Perhaps you already are one of these people. If so, you've developed strategies and mindsets that allow you to overlook the dark side of human existence and instead focus on the bright spots. If you find serenity and happiness always just out of reach, then you might benefit from  an arsenal of handy techniques to protect you when your mind begins to wander down dark alleys.

Before we begin I want to point out these techniques are not meant to take the place of professional intervention for serious psychological conditions such as clinical depression, which may require professional assistance.

Awareness
Monitoring our mental states is an important process. Sometimes we can slip into a downward spiral without realizing it. Try to develop a constant inner dialogue with yourself.  I used to make a point of asking myself several times a day, "How are you doing, fellow?"

Also take a look around you. Notice the world. Sometime we become too focused on our own narrow little bubble. The world is full of marvels, and everything around us has a story to tell, if we take time to listen. We're all constantly bombarded with information and distractions, and it's easy to become disconnected from the earth, and each other. I truly feel this sense of disconnection is a contributing factor to the escalating violence we're experiencing. If a person doesn't feel connected to his or her fellow beings, it becomes easier to inflict harm on them, and this applies to our environment as well.

Take Care of You
This should be obvious, but alas--it isn't.  A healthy body goes a long way toward healthy feelings. A proper diet, adequate hydration, active lifestyle, a stimulated brain, can contribute to an overall sense of well-being.

Reflect or Redirect?
Should you find yourself dwelling on negative thoughts, there are several ways to deal with them. Sometimes negative thoughts might be our intuition trying to tell us something. Perhaps unresolved issues are trying to catch our attention. In these cases, a period of reflection or soul-searching might be in order. Talking these issues through with a friend or counselor might help. If these negative thought patterns are just random, however, it might be better to redirect them into more positive channels. An effective technique is to replace negative mindsets with positive ones. If you're thinking angry thoughts, try replacing them with forgiving thoughts. If you're experiencing sadness, replace with joy.

Change of Scenery
Studies have shown that being active and engaging the mind increases happiness. If you find yourself feeling down and listless, try implementing an exercise program, taking a walk, or learning a new skill. If possible, leave town for a while on a vacation. Challenge yourself. Express your creative spirit. Join a group and meet new people.

Look Ahead
It isn't helpful to endlessly dwell on the past. We can't change anything, and presumably we've learned all we can from our past actions. It's usually more productive to set realistic goals for the future, both immediate and long-term, and begin working toward realizing these goals. Stay busy!

We learn from all these strategies that happiness isn't a feeling, it's activity.  If you have questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact us at
