  • Winter solstice occurs on the shortest day and longest night of the year, when the sun's daily maximum elevation in the sky is the lowest. The solstice lasts only a moment in time and has many different names such as "midwinter", "the longest night", "the shortest day" or ""the first day of winter".  The seasonal significance of the winter solstice is in the reversal of the gradual lengthening of nights and shortening of days.
  • Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied from culture to culture, but in most Northern Hemisphere cultures, a recognition of rebirth involving holidays, festivals, gatherings, rituals, or other celebrations are held.
  • Bring something for the communal alter and bundle up! We'll end our Celebration outside singing "This Little Light of Mine" and some noise making to "wake up the sun". Join us for cookies and peppermint hot chocolate following the service!

Throughout the month of December
, look for the
Giving Tree in the Chaffin Room and in Parish Hall. Take an ornament from the tree and make a donation to help the kids in our communities. Here's just one success story about Darren, the first student supported by SOWMA in 2004.
