NF Nehalem Wild Steelhead

Happy Thanksgiving and Greetings from Rob Crandall and the crew at Water Time Outfitters!

Winter Steelhead are the hot topic now and many anglers are anxiously waiting for the early arrivals to surge into NW rivers.  We've been watching also but don't get too excited until mid-December when good numbers of fish are available in the NF Nehalem and other North Coast rivers.   The Clackamas will get a few fish now through January but February is when we really get excited about the Clack.

This is the perfect time of year to be double checking for leaks in the waders, piling up on fleece and thermals so when it's time to go you are ready.  If you need some great flies and gear or a spey casting class to get you going for winter be sure to stop in at Royal Treatment Fly shop in West Linn 503-850-4397.

Fishing Report

Fishing on the Deschutes River was excellent into November.  Steelhead fishing didn't slow down once the water cleared up and fish are spread out throught the entire system.  There is a good mix of wild and hatchery fish. If you are headed over east try Maupin, Warm springs or S. Junction areas, be prepared for snow.  See our latest trip report and photos:

Coastal steelhead have been starting to show in the N.F. Nehalem and the Nestucca.  Watch our blog for updated reports on early arriving winter steelhead.

Clackamas River fall steelhead fishing is on the slow side.  Cooler weather usually sparks some action as the water temps drop.

 Catch More Steelhead Tip:

Where is your fly?  That is the most important question to be answered while winter Steelhead fishing.  Winter water is cold and fish will only move so far to take your fly.  Be sure your fly is swinging at least 1/2 the depth of the water.

How to get your fly deep is affected by three things: sinktips, weighted flies and swing speed.   Balance those three variables and you have a shot at an amazing winter steelhead.

Want to dial in your spey casting?  Check our schedule for the next class.

Winter Steelhead Trips- Save the Date Now!

The winter steelhead season in Oregon is fast approaching and our spots are filling fast.  Fish with Rob Crandall or Gil Muhleman on our favorite rivers fishing for wild and hatchery steelhead December through March.  Last year's runs were excellent.  If you are planning a trip to Oregon during that timeframe, be sure to add a day or two for some steelhead action.  We fish the NF Nehalem, Clackamas, Trask, Wilson and other great rivers.  See our blog entries from the NF Nehalem last year:  NF Nehalem February 2012 report
