In This Issue

As a physical therapist at TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation, I help patients feel better and get back to doing things they love. Patients who have treatment for breast cancer may have complex surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy. Sometimes, our patients need to recover strength, range of motion and endurance.  Others may have post-surgical pain and weakness or fatigue from chemotherapy.  As a non-profit, our doors are open to all patients regardless of insurance or ability to pay.

My mom, my best friend Elyse, your aunt, your teacher, your next door neighbor- these are women who have fought and continue to fight to beat breast cancer and return to their daily lives. I cry with my patients and laugh with them, and every day they deal with the issues of survivorship.

Once treatment is over, it is important to know that breast cancer survivors are still healing physically and emotionally. My patients always tell me how important their support system is during treatment and recovery. It is because of the help, care and love of friends, family, physicians and rehab specialists that our patients continue to feel better.

As we begin breast cancer awareness month, it is a perfect time to share some thoughts with you below on how you can support a breast cancer survivor you know. You may not know what to say, or say the wrong thing. It's always better to say or do something than nothing at all.

Supporting Breast Cancer Survivors with Random Acts of Kindness
Lauren Bober, PT, MPT, CES

Breast cancer survivors need support from family, friends, coworkers and neighbors, but sometimes it's hard to know what to do and say. Here are some ideas...
  • Remember the words:  Random Acts of Kindness
  • Make a meal months after treatment ends.
  • Send a text to let them know you are thinking about them, without expecting a reply!
  • Tell them about TurningPoint.
  • Stop by the house and encourage them to sit outside, and just let them know you are there to listen.
  • Make a bag of goodies to bring to chemo, filled with all her favorite things.
  • For kids, offer to help by walking their dog, watering their plants, taking out the trash or by sending a funny video.

Remember that the physical and mental recovery can take months and you can help make the process a little easier. Once the treatment is over, the real healing begins.
PATIENT PERSPECTIVE
Ashley

In a world where one can feel like just another patient and in and out of so many doctor's appointments, it was such a sweet breath of fresh air to be a part of the TurningPoint family--where you looked forward to the appointments instead of having anxiety; where you left feeling relaxed and encouraged instead of defeated.  I never left feeling sore or tense.  It was always the exact opposite.  I looked forward to my PT appointments because I knew my therapist would release tension; not cause it.

QUESTIONING NUTRITION
October Nutrition Q&A
by Lisa Eisele RD, LD, TurningPoint Dietitian

Q:  What can I do to decrease my risk of breast cancer, or decrease my risk of recurrence if I have had breast cancer?

A:  Research and recommendations reinforce a healthy life-style of physical activity, weight management, and a healthy diet.

During the month of October we celebrate prevention and survival.   It's also a time to address new strategies and research that increase both survival rate and foster risk reduction. Though the exact cause of breast cancer has not yet been determined there has been a lot of research on ways to decrease our chances of being diagnosed with breast cancer. Research has directly linked excessive body weight, unhealthy lifestyle and physical inactivity to certain types of cancer.
