In This Issue

A few weeks ago, I had breast cancer-related surgery - again! I don't want to count how many surgeries my husband, family and friends have supported me through over the past 16 years since my initial diagnosis. Happily, though, my last surgery was almost a decade ago. At that time, I was told that I would need revision surgery in about 10 more years. I recall thinking that I would be happy to have surgery at that point, because it meant that I got to that 10 year mark!

Recovering from surgery this time has only strengthened my resolve that a support system like TurningPoint is absolutely critical for breast cancer survivors. I have spent 13 years as a breast cancer physical therapist, advocate and researcher. But starting today, I will go to my workplace as a patient. I will put my recovery into the expert, trusted and compassionate hands of our TurningPoint caregivers. I know that they will help me feel better and get back to what I love to do.

How can TurningPoint get you back to what you love to do?

PATIENT PERSPECTIVE
Lorie

For the most part, cancer has been good to me.  I had some misconceptions about life after treatment; but, now I know better.   Because I did well during treatment, I thought after treatment I would jump right back into life where I left off.  I didn't realize I would face a "new normal," at least for a while,  of having to live with discomfort and live a lesser life than the "old normal."  I am very thankful that Jill had a vision for a place like TurningPoint - a place that not only rehabs the physical body but serves to educate and renew the mind and spirit.

EVIDENCE UPDATE
Pilates-Based Exercise Improves Upper Extremity Problems in
Breast Cancer Patients

It is well documented in the medical literature that breast cancer treatment, particularly surgery and radiation, contribute to upper extremity impairments, including decreased motion, weakness and difficulty doing usual functional tasks. A recent study examined the effectiveness of Pilates-based exercises, compared to combined exercise and home exercise as part of the rehabilitation of shoulder and arm issues for patients going through breast cancer treatment. Study  details and results.

TurningPoint offers weekly Pilates classes with a Physical Therapist who is both an expert in breast cancer rehabilitation and a certified Pilates instructor. Pilates may be a great addition to your rehabilitation plan to help you get back to the things you love to do!

QUESTIONING NUTRITION
August Nutrition Q&A
by Lisa Eisele RD, LD, TurningPoint Dietitian

Q:  Cherries are one of my favorite fruits.  With it being cherry season, I've been eating them by the pound.  Do they provide any health benefits?

A:  Choose Cherries, America's Super Fruit!

Not only are cherries satisfying to eat, they provide a wealth of health benefits earning them the title of "Super Fruit". Cherries have many important health benefits - from helping ease the pain of arthritis and gout, to reducing risk factors for heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. Cherries can be one of the recommended 5-9 daily servings of fruits/vegetables recommended for cancer prevention and decreased recurrence.  Cherries also contain melatonin, which has been found to help regulate the body's natural sleep patterns, aid with jet lag, prevent memory loss and delay the aging process.
