Congratulations
to
TurningPoint's
7 newly Certified Edema Specialists!

Our staff is an amazing group of talented, dedicated and compassionate women (and a few men!). I am proud to work with each and every one of them. Together, we are a team dedicated to helping make the lives of breast cancer patients just a little better.

This past week, seven of our physical and massage therapists worked very hard over many days, evenings and a weekend to successfully complete the first ever Edema Certification Course offered by The Oncology Section of the American Physical Therapy Association. Once again, the commitment of our clinical staff to excellence has put us on the cutting edge of breast cancer survivorship care.

Thank you to our staff for taking such good care of our patients and for supporting all of the work TurningPoint does to advocate for this care to be part of every person's breast cancer journey.

If you are a breast cancer patient or survivor, what can TurningPoint do to help make your life just a little better?

TurningPoint recently hosted the debut of a new course from the American Physical Therapy Association, Oncology Section, on treatment of edema (swelling).  The 6-day hands on course followed 16 hours of online preliminary course work and resulted in participants becoming Certified Edema Specialists.

The course instructors were Marisa Perdomo, PT, DPT, MS, CCES, Assistant Professor in Clinical Physical Therapy at the University of Southern California and Antoinette P. Sander, PT, DPT, MS, CLT-LANA, Associate Professor Emerita from Northwestern University, Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement Sciences, Chicago, IL.  Both instructors are recognized clinicians and researchers who are internationally known and respected.

The course, recently developed by the APTA, is evidence-based and client-centered. It was attended by all of TP's Physical Therapists and Massage Therapists, as well as clinicians traveling from across the country to participate.
CARETAKER PERSPECTIVE

April 15, 2015. The fact that it was tax day was far from the worst thing about this afternoon.

"You have early stage breast cancer." This news was certainly not what I expected to hear one week after my first ever mammogram. I had turned forty ten months before and I had made a promise to myself to not turn forty-one before my initial screening. At first I was confused. Breast cancer didn't run in my family. I was healthy, an active middle-aged (barely) woman who loved to go on long hikes and was just learning to mountain bike.
Really?  I had breast cancer?

EVIDENCE UPDATE
lymphedema at risk activites:  fact or fiction?

Many of the precautionary guidelines related to lymphedema provided to breast cancer patients are anecdotal and not based on research. Unfortunately, many of these guidelines place a large burden on patients and clinicians who go to great lengths to abide by them.

A recent study published in March 2016 was the first large scale, prospective study to investigate whether there is an association between certain activities and increases in arm volume in patients treated for breast cancer and screened for lymphedema.

This study suggests that although cellulitis increases risk of lymphedema, blood draws, injections and blood pressure readings on the affected side, as well as air travel, may not be associated with arm volume increases.  However, simple infection precautions make sense, such as using gloves when gardening and topical antibiotics for small cuts on the affected arm.

QUESTIONING NUTRITION
June Nutrition Q&A
by Lisa Eisele RD, CSO, LD, TurningPoint Dietitian

Q:  Is eating grilled meat safe?

A:  There are some concerns.

The American Institute for Cancer Research (ACIR) expert report says there is not enough evidence to show that grilled meat increases your risk of cancer.  But we do know that cooking meat at high temperatures, like grilling, creates cancer-causing substances that may attach to the meat via smoke or flame-ups.
