Mother Daughter with Flowers

Hi, I'm Grayson Webb and I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the newest member of the TurningPoint team.
Physical therapy allows me to pursue my passion of caring for others and helping individuals lead active, healthy lifestyles. I have a doctorate degree in physical therapy and have been working in outpatient orthopedics for the past three years. Two years ago I attended the TurningPoint continuing education course and I was immediately drawn to the mission and the people at TurningPoint.

When I attended TurningPoint's recent annual fundraiser, The Pink Affair, I saw the community outreach first hand.  Hearing former patients' testimonials confirmed that this was a community I wanted to join. I am excited to have the chance to make this change in my career and have the opportunity to spend quality time with patients to truly make a difference. I look forward to joining the fight against breast cancer and making the journey as easy as possible for our patients.

CARETAKER PERSPECTIVE
May Caretaker Perspective
Kaitlyn (l) with her mom, Tricia Kosten

Kaitlyn Kosten
In honor of Mother's Day, we would like to feature a caretaker perspective, written by the 15 year-old daughter of a patient.  Kaitlyn Kosten is a freshman at North Forsyth High School, enjoys the drumline in the marching band and hopes to pursue a career in engineering.

There is a moment in everyone's life when the impossible happens. There is a moment in everyone's life when the option of turning back is no longer available, when the world pauses and suddenly everything is unreal, yet the pain of reality is nearly unbearable. For me, this moment was while I gathered with my sisters and brother to discover the horrific news: my own mom was diagnosed with cancer.
Learn how Kaitlyn's impressions have shaped her outlook.
TURNINGPOINT HEROES
Get to Know the Heroes that Make TurningPoint Possible!
I am proud to give my time, money and heart to support TurningPoint. As a board member, director of the development committee, volunteer on the auction committee, and donor, I commit a great deal of myself to TurningPoint. I am also a mother, wife, daughter, and friend with a demanding career in finance. TurningPoint needs me, but no matter how much I give I get just as much in return (besides a tax deduction for my donations!).

My mother, a third generation breast cancer survivor, is a patient. I have journeyed with her in her physical and emotional struggle, and experienced the support and hope that the TurningPoint staff gives to their patients. Breast cancer is emotionally, physically, and oftentimes financially burdening. Many of the women that TurningPoint serves don't have the resources to pay for the much needed physical therapy, massage, counseling, and support.

TurningPoint needs me to help raise the funds to take care of these patients. I need TurningPoint to continue to serve my mother, my friends, and my community. My two little girls need my time and my heart, but they also need to learn the joy that comes from helping others and giving back. I give to TurningPoint but the time I spend giving, gives me so much more in return.

EVIDENCE UPDATE
The TurningPoint and Avon Breast Center at Grady Partnership Continues at the Annual Meeting of
The American Society of Breast Surgeons!

Dr. Lisa Lai (left) visited recently with TP therapists to further increase her understanding of the role of specialized rehabilitation for breast cancer patients.
The results of a 2-year research joint project between TurningPoint, the Avon Breast Center at Grady Hospital, Emory University and Morehouse School of Medicine were presented by Dr. Lisa Lai at a recent meeting of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, held in Dallas, Texas.  Dr. Lai is a surgeon doing Fellowship Training with Dr. Sheryl Gabram at the Avon Breast Center. Dr. Gabram is a TurningPoint Medical Advisory Board member.

The goal of the research project was to examine the feasibility and impact of a prospective surveillance approach to breast cancer rehabilitation. Our research team concluded that early identification and management of breast cancer treatment side effects (such as decreased function, limited range of motion and lymphedema) may decrease the impact of these issues and potentially improve quality of life.

Support Group Donates to TP
Casting for Recovery

Sandy Weber (left), long time member and chair of the Ruth Young Women's Cancer Support Group stopped by TP to present a donation from the group to TurningPoint's Jill Binkley. As a former patient at TP, Ruth Young found strength and support in TurningPoint services and the group has continued to honor TP in Ruth's memory.

Meetings for the faith-based support group are on the first Tuesday of every month at 7pm at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church in Marietta.
"Amazing and meaningful!" were the words TP's Karen Burpo used to describe her experience at the recent Casting for Recovery retreat held at Smithgall Woods, near Helen, GA.  The national non-profit offers a unique program for breast cancer survivors that combines education and peer support with the therapeutic sport of flyfishing.  The annual event, offered at no cost to participants, will be held next in Georgia on May 19-21, 2017.  Check online in December to apply for chance to participate.
QUESTIONING NUTRITION
May Nutrition Q&A
by Lisa Eisele RD, CSO, LD, TurningPoint Dietitian

Q:
Can eating sugar cause cancer or increase my chance of recurrence?

A:  I get asked this question almost daily!

There has yet to be any randomized, controlled trials showing that sugar causes cancer.  However, obesity is considered a risk factor for several kinds of cancer and guidelines exist for refined sugar consumption.
