One Pink Night. Many Lives Changed.

This year TurningPoint's annual fundraiser, The Pink Affair, will celebrate its 15th anniversary on March 12, 2016 at The Westin Atlanta Perimeter North in Dunwoody.  I've been involved with this wonderful event since it began in 2001 when the first Pink Affair was held in my sister's home in Roswell with our ZTA sorority alumni members as attendees.  Through the years the Pink Affair has grown from a modest sorority fundraiser in a living room to an annual event for TurningPoint with over 350 attendees last year at The Retreat in Dunwoody.

Although the event gets bigger each year, it continues to be a fun-filled evening spent with friends who have a common goal - to raise funds to directly benefit TurningPoint's breast cancer patients and their families.  I hope you will join us on March 12, 2016 as we raise a glass of champagne and toast 15 years for a fantastic cause!

Cheers to 15 Years!

PATIENT PERSPECTIVE
February Patient Perspective
Monica and her husband Michael
Monica Jones
I would like to thank TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation for their great services and facility.  I am a two time breast cancer survivor.  I came to TurningPoint hoping that with their care I would not have to endure additional surgeries due to tight and painful scar tissue that rendered me almost helpless.

My first visit with the TurningPoint staff let me know I would finally get the treatment that I so desperately needed.

EVIDENCE UPDATE
Woman hand on chin
Body Image and Sexuality
After Breast Cancer

A recent review of research examined the relationship between breast cancer and body image and sexuality. Breast cancer treatment commonly alters a woman's reproductive and sexual functioning, body integrity, and the ways in which she self-identifies as a sexual being. Research has shown that women with breast cancer experience significantly greater rates of sexual dysfunction and poorer body image than do healthy women. Unfortunately, most breast cancer patients are dissatisfied with the amount and quality of care they receive from their healthcare providers around sexuality. Although a substantial proportion of survivors experience difficulties with sexual functioning, reproduction, and body image, each woman's experience is individual and influenced by a range of factors including age, stage of breast cancer, types of treatment and relationship status.

Gift In Memory of Linda Rundell

David and Linda Rundell
TurningPoint was awarded a gift from Cross and Crown Lutheran Church, in memory of our former patient Linda Rundell. This gift was directed by David Rundell, Linda's husband and their children, Kati, Colin and Conor. In David's words..."Linda would have been so pleased that this was possible. TurningPoint was such a help to Linda and our family. I can't think of a better way to honor Linda."
TurningPoint In The News!

TurningPoint was featured in a radio interview on The Business Authority Radio (episode 012). TurningPoint volunteer and media relations expert Thomas Smith was interviewed by Craig Williams on the Pro Business Channel. Thomas provided great information on TurningPoint's mission and the need for specialized rehabilitation.

Size Doesn't Matter Supports TP!

Amena Mitchell, former TurningPoint patient and supporter.
Alpharetta Athletic Club Supports TP!

From Left: Alpharetta Athletic Club Catering Manager Nichole Devane, TurningPoint PT Carrie Kozel, Jill Binkley, Club Golf Pro Blake Atchley and Tournament Organizer and TurningPoint Supporter Mike Kozel present TurningPoint with a check from the 2015 Annual Golf Tournament.
Prior to her diagnosis in 2013, Amena MitchellI wanted to do something to show support for a couple of friends who were breast cancer survivors, but she wasn't sure exactly what.  After her surgery and physical therapy at TurningPoint, she decided to advocate for awareness, and in the process make a difference by giving back to an organization that positively impacts the experiences survivors face while dealing with the affects of the illness.

Through her branded t-shirt line: Size Doesn't Matter, Finding the Cure Does™, Amena is able to do just that - make a difference!  "TurningPoint truly helped me, so I want to give back." For the second year, Amena has supported TP with a portion of the proceeds from her t-shirt sales. More information at: atmitchellgroup.com.
The Annual Toys for Tots Golf Tournament, held at Alpharetta Athletic Club in December, has a long history with TurningPoint.  About 7 years ago, North Georgia College student Carrie Kozel was drawn to TP's mission while attending a class on breast cancer rehabilitation taught by TP clinicians.  She wanted to do a class project to benefit TP and enlisted the help of father-in-law Mike Kozel, who connected with the Toys for Tots tournament to benefit TurningPoint.  Carrie later did an internship at TurningPoint and is now on staff as a physical therapist.

While in the clinic recently with club staff that support the tournament each year, Mike noted "This tournament has grown over the years and we are thrilled at the support it has generated for TurningPoint and its patients."
QUESTIONING NUTRITION
February Nutrition Q&A

Q: In this, the American Heart Month, what can I do to decrease my risk of heart disease?

A: There are risk factors we can address.
February is American Heart Month.  Here at TurningPoint, breast cancer is our focus.  We are passionate about keeping you in the loop with the latest research on breast cancer and ways to decrease recurrence.  During the month of February I like to spend some time on an additional health issue I'm passionate about--cardiovascular health. Efforts to address good cardiovascular health will also help maintain a healthy weight, which is a factor in reducing recurrence of breast cancer.

What you do or don't eat, whether you smoke, and if you're physically active, are all choices made by you and can directly affect your health.  This year instead of focusing on what NOT to do, focus on the positive changes you can make to decrease your risk for heart disease.
