"You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream." C.S. Lewis

Many of us set goals and resolutions for the New Year. As 2016 begins, many of the women we serve will have the goal of living a year feeling better and able to do more than last year - one that doesn't include surgery, or radiation, or chemotherapy. For some, the goal will be to live another cancer-free year. For others, it will be simply to live another year in the best way possible.

You can be sure that all of those we serve will have profound and consequential goals for 2016. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and community partners, TurningPoint will be there to help our patients meet these goals.

Happy New Year from the staff, board and volunteers of TurningPoint!

PATIENT PERSPECTIVE

Cassandra Wilson

On December 24, 2014, I went in and the doctor said "Mrs. Wilson, you have breast cancer." I thought what a Christmas gift, to be told you have breast cancer. I had just started a new career, things were just starting to work out for our family. Financially, things had finally got back on track and I was so excited. I thought to myself, NO!

EVIDENCE UPDATE
Lymphedema and
Shoulder Problems
TurningPoint clinicians have long been aware that there is a relationship between long-standing lymphedema and shoulder pain and problems. In a study published in November 2015 researchers in Korea examined the relationship between lymphedema and shoulder joint changes in breast cancer patients. Forty-seven breast cancer patients with lymphedema were assessed. The duration of the arm swelling and shoulder pain were recorded. Ultrasound examination of the shoulder joint was performed in all patients to detect any changes in the soft tissue around the shoulder joint.

Interestingly, abnormalities were found in 87% of the 47 participants.

Kendra Scott Jewelery Gives Back
to the Community

South Forsyth Middle School went all out in their October celebration and support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, with the teams participating in the "Pink Out", wearing pink socks, making and selling pink ribbons and 'pink-out' t-shirts to teachers and students.  The Beta Club and competition cheerleader squad conducted these fundraisers which benefited TurningPoint.

Exemplifying the corporate philosophy of Family, Fashion and Philanthropy,  Kendra Scott Jewelery recently donated gifts of earrings for some lucky TurningPoint patients for every pair of a certain style sold during the month of October in their Avalon store. Pictured above are (l to r) Avalon store manager Tiffany Wade, TP patient Roni Wolk, and Kendra Scott's Leisa Stone and Janna Waller. Thank you for partnering with us to honor our patients!

QUESTIONING NUTRITION
January Nutrition Q&A

Q: Losing weight is always on my list of New Year's resolutions.  Any advice?

A: "Fad" diets usually disappoint us.
It's New Year's resolution time.  For many of us, losing weight is near the top of the list.

Being an ideal body weight has many health benefits especially when it comes to cancer prevention and decreasing recurrence rates for breast cancer survivors. Weight loss, if one is overweight, is a great goal to have, if done properly.  Unfortunately many turn to the latest and greatest "fad" diet to help them achieve their goal.  The definition of a fad diet is any weight loss program or aid that promises to produce dramatic weight loss in a very short period of time. These diets are usually very restricted in calories and may even eliminate whole food groups all together.Research shows in order to obtain the nutrients your body needs you must consume a balanced and varied diet. Fad diets do not allow you to eat a well-balanced diet, especially when eliminating whole food groups, and can put you at risk for nutrient deficiencies and increase your risk for certain diseases.  Fad diets are often short lived because they're too restrictive, too full of rules, or too complicated.  In order to spot a "fad" diet, review the following list.  If any of these characteristics ring true, odds are it's not worth the effort.  Please consider scheduling an appointment with TurningPoint's registered dietitian to discuss healthy and effective ways to achieve weight loss.  Read on for list of characteristics of fad diets.
