Care. Compassion. Clinical Excellence.
In This Issue
From our Executive Director
Jill Binkley, PT, MSc, CLT
In December, a month of celebration, giving and joy, TurningPoint will care for our 3000th breast cancer patient since 2003! In a season filled with joy, lights and gifts wrapped with care, the staff at TurningPoint will wrap our arms around this 3000th woman as she goes through her breast cancer treatment. We will provide her with the gifts of physical and emotional comfort, compassion and hope...and enable her to enjoy this season just a little more. We will let her know that her financial status will not be a barrier to care at TurningPoint.

Please consider TurningPoint when you plan your year-end giving. We need your support more than ever to sustain the amazing growth we have seen over the past few years. With your generosity we can continue to offer support, comfort and hope to breast cancer survivors and their families in the coming year.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday,
Jill
PATIENT PERSPECTIVE
December Patient Perspective
Christy Woods
Christy (l) and her friend
My doctor and nurse practioner recommended I enlist TurningPoint to learn about lymphedema, improve my range of motion, and increase my overall well being.  Along my journey, I was introduced to other survivors and all of them sang TurningPoint's praises.

Finally, I took everyone's suggestion and what a positive difference TurningPoint has made in my journey!  The care, courtesy, and consideration of the staff made me feel like a woman capable of recovering as opposed to just another patient in a sterile medical environment.  I met other survivors blossoming post treatment and felt like I could, too!

EVIDENCE UPDATE
Breast Reconstruction and Lymphedema Risk

Patients often ask us if breast reconstruction after mastectomy increases their risk of lymphedema. Several studies in the past suggest that breast reconstruction does not increase lymphedema risk. In a recent study published in October, researchers compared the number of patients who developed lymphedema in three surgical groups: mastectomy alone, immediate expander or implant and immediate reconstruction with autologous tissue (patients' own tissue, such as TRAM flap). Immediate reconstruction refers to reconstruction performed at the time of the mastectomy.

Alpharetta Ambush Soccer Club sold over 750 pink tee shirts and Ambush teams wore the shirts at Pink Out games over a 2 week period, both locally and at out of state games, to raise awareness for breast cancer. Five team members visited TurningPoint and presented the donation to Executive Director, Jill Binkley. Ambush Soccer Club President Doug Yearwood remarked, "Purchasing, supporting, and wearing these pink tee shirts is a way for Ambush Soccer to help our players understand larger issues outside of soccer--life issues with a bigger emphasis on taking action."
Orangetheory owners Staci Vailancourt (l) and Laura Salatino (r) held a fundraiser to benefit breast cancer awareness and TurningPoint during the month of October.  The fitness company donated a penny for every calorie burned in all the classes one day in October and brought the donation by the clinic recently to present to Jill Binkley (c),TurningPoint Executive Director.
QUESTIONING NUTRITION
December Nutrition Q&A
with TurningPoint Dietitian Lisa Eisele

Q:  Do you recommend taking a Vitamin C supplement during cold and flu season?

A:  Found in more than just citrus!

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid is a water soluble vitamin and a powerful antioxidant.  Its main role in our bodies is to maintain connective tissue, including bones, blood vessels and skin.  During the winter months it is not uncommon for people to supplement with large doses of Vitamin C because they've heard it helps prevent catching the common cold.  The truth to the matter is, there is no evidence that consuming large amounts of vitamin C (200 mg or greater) reduced the frequency of the common cold. However, there was a tendency for Vitamin C to reduce the severity and duration of colds. I always encourage my clients to get their nutrients from whole food rather than pill form.
