Care. Compassion. Clinical Excellence.
In This Issue

Happy Fourth of July from all of the staff, board and volunteers at TurningPoint. Thank you to all those who serve our country and their families who sacrifice so much!

TurningPoint enables breast cancer survivors to claim back their ability to participate in the fullest with their life, their community and their family.

Through emotional and physical therapy coupled with a caring environmnent, TurningPoint truly makes a life-changing improvement to the quality of life of its patients. As the husband of a breast cancer survivor, I saw first-hand the positive impact of TurningPoint on our lives and the lives of others.

In order to make TurningPoint's care available to as many breast cancer patients as possible, I volunteered to serve as the Chair of the annual charity golf tournament. This is my third year, and I know it will be better than ever! We need your support - as a golfer or sponsor. Joining us at the dinner and auction on Sunday night is a great way to participate and support the organization even if you're not a golfer. See you at Dunwoody Country Club on August 30 and 31st!

quilt toteThe TurningPoint Quilting Group is starting a new project, making quilted tote bags to distribute to breast cancer survivors undergoing chemotherapy. The group will meet on the third Saturday of each month (the first meeting will be Saturday, July 18th) at TurningPoint from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Patients and former patients of TurningPoint are welcome and invited to participate in the project. No quilting experience is necessary.

TURNINGPOINT EDUCATION EVENT
Introduction to Pilates
Presented by Lauren Bober, TurningPoint Physical Therapist and Certified Pilates Instructor

Wednesday, July 8, 2015  |  8:00 - 9:30 am

Intro to Pilates

During and after breast cancer treatment, many women experience weakness in their core muscles and have difficulty maintaining good posture. Pilates is a form of exercise which emphasizes the balanced development of the body, through core strength, increased flexibility, and awareness, in order to support efficient, graceful movement. Join us to learn about Pilates, the philosophy and techniques, and be introduced to a beginner level mat class to see what Pilates is all about!  Bring a water bottle, towel and your mat, if you have one (if not, one will be provided).

This event is open to all TurningPoint patients and is designed as an introduction to Pilates for patients who have good range of motion in their extremities and are just beginning to do CORE work. RSVP is required.

PATIENT PERSPECTIVE
Diane Nolan
Chemo! Lumpectomy! Radiation! - words not used in my normal vocabulary.

On the outside, your hair grows back, you smile again, you can eat out in a restaurant, and everyone around you thinks that you're back to your ole' self.  It couldn't be any further from that!  And while I can say that I have survived my first year after successful treatment, I still had pain, discomfort, fatigue, and low energy.  I thought that I was going to have to live with these symptoms as my "new normal".

OH. NO. I. DON'T! After being referred to TurningPoint by my wonderful surgeon, I have been so thrilled and surprised with the progress and results from just a few sessions with these remarkable professionals. I consider myself blessed and fortunate!

 Many thanks, Ladies!

EVIDENCE UPDATE
Report from the National Institute of Health Oncology Rehabilitation Symposium

NIH STUDYThe National Institute of Health (NIH) convened a meeting of research experts in the field of cancer rehabilitation at the NIH in Bethesda, MD in June.  Jill Binkley, TurningPoint's Executive Director, attended the meeting, along with other rehabilitation professionals with an interest in oncology rehabilitation.  Presentations and discussion focused on practical issues and challenges faced with integrating rehabilitation services into cancer care. While many models of care were outlined, it was generally agreed that access to rehabilitation for cancer patients continues to be the exception, rather than the rule in the United States. TurningPoint is a model of integrated, community-based rehabilitation and offers a local solution to this national problem. In a non-profit model such as ours, barriers to care are reduced by offering unique accessibility through financial assistance, complimentary programs and outreach to inner city and minority women and Spanish translation. We are proud to exemplify a successful model of care that is one way of addressing the national challenge of providing rehabilitation care for oncology patients.

QUESTIONING NUTRITION

July Nutrition Q&A

with TurningPoint Dietitian Lisa Eisele

Q:  Are Blueberries really that nutritious?

A:   The "powerhouse" berry boasts bounteous benefits.

June-July is peak blueberry season. Blueberries are naturally sweet and provide a wealth of nutritional benefits.  Blueberries are among the fruits highest in antioxidant power.  They also contain numerous phytochemicals, which have been shown to have cancer fighting properties as well.
