"You have cancer" Three of the most frightening words anyone can hear.  Me? What?  No...I don't get sick. I am Super Woman, I take care of everyone. My kids are so young, 10 and twin 6 year-olds. TurningPoint was there for me during that very vulnerable time.  There really aren't enough words to express how lucky I am to have found a new family at TurningPoint where even a super woman like me can feel totally comfortable leaving her cape at the door.

This month, TurningPoint is focused on outreach to businesses and corporations to support patients with breast cancer in our community. If you are a patient, former patient or a friend of TurningPoint, please consider asking your company, or one you do business with, to become a partner of the organization. I needed TurningPoint, and TurningPoint needs corporate partners.

TurningPoint is Seeking Corporate Partners
The Need:

TurningPoint supports almost 400 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients in the Greater Atlanta area every year. Over 40% of the patients served receive financial assistance to remove barriers to care, and many more are served by TurningPoint's complimentary exercise and education programs. Corporate Partners are critical to providing this care.

Corporate Sponsorship Advantages:

Businesses and corporations who invest in social issues improve customer perception and increase employee retention and recruitment. Did you know that 78 percent of millennials say that corporate social responsibility influences where they work?

Why TurningPoint?

Virtually ALL of your employees have been touched by breast cancer. It affects your employee, your customer or client, a family member, or friend. TurningPoint's national advocacy on behalf of breast cancer survivors will appeal to your regional and national customers as well!

"You have cancer." Those are three of the most frightening words anyone can hear.  Me? What?  No...I don't get sick. I am Super Woman, I take care of everyone. My kids are so young, 10 and twin 6 year-olds.

A few months after my surgery, I was referred by my doctor to TurningPoint for physical therapy.  I had heard many good things about TurningPoint from my cousin, who had breast cancer a few years before, but it wasn't until I experienced it for myself that I realized TurningPoint is more than just physical therapy - it's mind, body and soul therapy.

EVIDENCE UPDATE
Weight Training May Reduce Post-Treatment Decline in Function in Breast Cancer Patients

Studies have shown that breast cancer survivors may experience deterioration in their physical function after treatment has ended. In a recent paper, researchers compared the physical function at one year post-treatment in women who had been involved in a year-long weight training program, compared to survivors who had not.

QUESTIONING NUTRITION

June Nutrition Q&A

with TurningPoint Dietitian Lisa Eisele

Q:  Protein seems to be a hot topic lately.  Could you please tell me how much I should eat?

A: Let's ponder protein!

Protein is a hot, hot, hot topic these days.  Just take a walk down the grocery store isle and you'll find it in breakfast cereals, bread, granola bars, and even sports drinks.   Knowing how much protein your body requires is essential for good health, but too much protein can be counterproductive.  Telling you how much protein you need is challenging without knowing a little about you. Let me explain. The RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) for protein for an (sedentary) adult starts at .36 grams per pound of body weight.  But it's not that cut and dry.  Protein requirements are effected by several factors; for instance, active adults, recreational exercisers, and endurance athletes have different protein needs than someone undergoing cancer treatment, who's pregnant, a growing teen, or is elderly. At TurningPoint, protein needs are discussed at your initial consultation.  Recommendations are tailored to your specific needs and desired outcome.   You'll leave knowing exactly how much protein your body requires and the best way to achieve this goal for cancer survivorship.

Q:  Out of curiosity, what are your favorite foods?

A: Seasonal is smart!

I have many favorite foods, but in the summer I like to take advantage of all the fresh fruits and vegetables of the season. Fruits and vegetables decrease inflammation in the body which helps lower your risk of developing cancer and decreases recurrence for survivors.  I like to incorporate as many anti- inflammatory foods into my meal plan as I can.  Making a simple fruit salad or throwing some of my favorite vegetables on the grill is an easy and delicious way to enjoy the seasonal produce.   My top 10 picks for this time of year are:   mini sweet peppers, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, peaches, avocados, asparagus, beets, cantaloupe and watermelon.
