Helping deal with adversity is TurningPoint's very mission. Each day, women going through breast cancer treatment walk through our doors in tears, are greeted with a comforting smile, and depart with a hug... and a bit more hope. Spring is nature's reminder that the adversity of winter is followed by the warmth of spring. I hope that springtime brings the women we care for a reminder of life's joys and renewal of hope.

PATIENT PERSPECTIVE
Lynn Stoudt

Lynn Stoudt
Lynn's 5K debut at the Atlanta Hot Chocolate
Post-surgery, I had a lot of difficulty with range of motion and pain. While I had excellent treatment and care from my surgeon and health care providers, these issues did not seem to be a focus, and I assumed it was the "new normal". At my last follow up, I expressed frustration to my surgeon, and he referred me for physical therapy. Having had PT for frozen shoulders before, I was skeptical.  I am so grateful for the treatment and encouragement I have received from everyone at TurningPoint, but especially my PT team of Lauren and Anita. They always know exactly what to do to keep me progressing along.

Through the motivation and success of my TurningPoint treatments, I am now enjoying my work-life balance by adding new activities to my schedule. Coming to TurningPoint has literally been a life changer for me!

EVIDENCE UPDATE
Chemobrain and Breast Cancer: Not Your Imagination...

Cognitive impairment, often termed "chemobrain", occurs in 10-40% of all cancepatients, and is an emerging target of cancer survivorship research. A recent study reviewed published studies to explore the impact of chemobrain on the quality of life of breast cancer survivors. The authors reviewed 457 papers, and found 7 studies that were relevant to breast cancer survivors and met their study requirements. Using a systematic approach, data from the 7 studies was extracted and then synthesized.

QUESTIONING NUTRITION

May Nutrition Q&A

Q:   What's the difference between Light Olive oil and Extra Virgin Olive oil?

A: Purity and Processing are key

Light Olive Oil and Extra Virgin Olive oil are both made from olives, but it's the processing that sets them apart. Extra virgin olive oil is the purest form of olive oil that you can buy.   Extra virgin olive oil is made by crushing olives and extracting oil. If the olives are of a high quality then the oil will be worthy to be labeled "extra virgin".  To meet the standards of "extra virgin" the oil must have a good oleic acid composition as well as hold a superior taste, color and aroma.  Extra virgin olive oil is made by using mechanical means only and no additives are used in this process. Light olive oil on the other hand is considerably less pure. It is made from olive oil that is not worthy of the "extra virgin" label. It is refined further using either mechanical, thermal or chemical means so that it can be ready for consumption.   Further processing results in an oil that is colorless and tasteless. To make "light" olive oil more appealing to consumers a higher quality olive oil is then added back so the end product has some color and flavor.  Generally, small amounts of higher quality oil is added back thus giving the "light" olive oil its name.  A lot of people get confused thinking "light" olive oil has fewer calories and less fat than extra virgin olive oil, but there's no difference in the two except for the color and pureness.

Q:  Silly question, but why does my urine smell funny after eating asparagus?  Does it mean I'm allergic?

A: Special smelling capability!

No, you're not allergic and no it's not a silly question at all. Asparagus is blessed with having sulfurous amino acids.  When these acids break down they form a smelly "volatile" (airborne) chemical.  This volatile chemical/smell can be detected as soon as 15 minutes after ingesting this delicious spring time vegetable.   But the interesting "fun fact" about all of this: only about one-quarter of the population appears to have the special gene that allows them to smell those compounds. So, if you smell a funny odor in your urine after you eat asparagus, you're not only normal, you have a good nose as well.
