PATIENT PERSPECTIVE
Karen Hamlin

Six years ago, I was diagnosed with Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC). I chose full treatment- chemotherapy, bilateral surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy.

I exercise, watch my diet, maintain a spiritually positive attitude, and continue to work even since my retirement. However, there are risks and side effects of treatment.  At the beginning of last year, I was experiencing serious cramping of chest area muscles and an increase in lymphedema in my arms. My Radiation Oncologist recommended physical therapy at TurningPoint.

EVIDENCE UPDATE

The Benefits of Massage for Patients with Breast Cancer

A recent study found that there is substantial research to support the benefits of massage, yoga and energy conservation techniques for stress reduction, anxiety, depression, fatigue and improved quality of life. The report concludes that these interventions are safe, effective and useful to be included in clinical practice guidelines.

Massage therapy has been shown to be a benefit to breast cancer survivors, and the benefits last long after the massage session. This month our TurningPoint's massage therapists, who are experts in the field of massage for patients going through breast cancer treatment, will lead an interesting and informative education event on massage and breast cancer.

 Atlanta 2 Day Walk Award
Komen Atlanta Award

Komen Atlanta Race

TurningPoint was awarded a 2015 grant from It's The Journey, Atlanta 2 Day Walk.  Kim Goff (l), Executive Director of It's the Journey, presents the award to TP's Karen Burpo and Renee Vaughn at an awards dinner last month.  This marks over a decade of support for TurningPoint from this wonderful organization.  TurningPoint was also awarded a special grant designated by the individual walker (the sister of a patient) who raised the most funding for her walk last fall.  This marks the second time TurningPoint has been designated for special funding by a walk participant.  We thank all of our supporters who participate in this event and encourage all friends of TurningPoint to mark October 3-4, 2015 for this year's event.

We are proud to announce that Komen Atlanta has again awarded TurningPoint with an annual grant to continue serving breast cancer survivors in the Atlanta area and beyond.  This award continues the partnership TurningPoint has enjoyed with the Komen Atlanta affiliate since TurningPoint was founded over 12 years ago.  On behalf of the women we serve, we are very appreciative of this support.

TurningPoint is again sponsoring a team for this year's Komen Race for the Cure, held May 9 at Lenox Square.  We encourage you to sign up to walk with the TurningPoint team!
QUESTIONING NUTRITION

Nutrition Q&A

Q: Which is safer to store and cook my leftovers--Glass or Plastic?

A: Helpful and readily available!

Glass is always the best choice for storing leftovers and reheating food in the microwave. With that being said, I know it's not always feasible especially for those with small children, so here are a couple of things to remember when it comes to plastic:

  • Buy BPA free whenever possible
  • Know the code.  All plastic food storage containers have a tiny triangle with a number engraved on the bottom. These numbers range from 1-7, and indicate they type of plastic used.
  • Use only numbers 1, 2, 4, and 5.
  • Avoid number 3, 6 and 7 (these may contain BPA (Bisphenol-A)
  • Never heat food up in plastic food containers, like margarine tubs, restaurant carryout containers or used containers from microwavable meals.
  • Only use plastic containers for cold or dry food storage.
  • When storing foods that are hot such as soups, chili, lasagna, etc. it's best to use glass.
Q:

I know that quinoa is one of the new "super" grains, but I have yet to find a recipe that I like. Do you have a favorite you can share?

A: Yummy Quinoa Pilaf

While quinoa is considered a whole grain, it is actually a seed.  This nutty flavored seed can be prepared like whole grains such as rice or barley and has the highest protein content of the "whole grain" family. The following recipe is one of my favorites from Ellie Krieger, Registered Dietitian, host of the Food Network Show Healthy Appetite. It's quick and easy and is delicious hot or cold.   See complete Quinoa Recipe here..
