PATIENT PERSPECTIVE
Amena Mitchell

I was always optimistic that I would be just fine (after hearing my diagnosis), but had no clue of the pending challenge I would face. I developed a condition called cording that caused the loss of mobility and limited the range of motion in my right arm.  I was told it resulted from the build-up of lymphatic fluids due to the lack of movement post-surgery.  This is where TurningPoint, my God-send, comes in.

I literally could not do basic tasks that required the use of my right arm.  I walked around like I had on an invisible sling because it hurt too much when I attempted to raise my arm.  My first session at TurningPoint was the best and the worst... The best because I knew I was on the path to healing, but the worst because it was painful when my physical therapist, Lauren, first started the process of stretching and working the cording out.  After that initial visit things got progressively better.

Approaching two years after surgery, I will always have a special place in my heart for TurningPoint.  I truly appreciate the kindness and care that the staff showers on all of their patients, as well as the encouragement to stay positive and motivated.  Since my experience, I've trade-marked a Breast Cancer Awareness t-shirt: Size Doesn't Matter, Finding The Cure Does™, and have committed to provide a percentage of the proceeds to TurningPoint annually.  I will forever be an advocate and supporter of the cause and of TurningPoint!

EVIDENCE UPDATE
To Jump-Start Your Exercise Routine, Be Mindful

The benefits of exercise for breast cancer survivors during and after treatment is well known. But...we all struggle to stick with an exercise program, particularly when life gets busy. A new study suggests that by paying more attention to the experience of exercise itself, we are more likely to continue an exercise program. This is important, especially to reluctant exercisers.

Research confirms that one of the most reliable indicators of whether people will continue to exercise is that they find exercise satisfying. They gain enjoyment from being active!

A recent study hoped to shed light on what makes exercise feel pleasurable to some and like drudgery to others. Specifically, they were interested in the role of mindfulness, a deliberate awareness of what is happening in the present moment.

Try adding some fun to your workout with this month's "Balls, Bosus and Bands" Class, presented by our TurningPoint physical therapists on March 25, 2015 in the TurningPoint gym.

TURNING-POINTS
"Stitching Our Lives Together"
Mardi Gras Festivities Benefit TP

Members of the Pilates Class gathered on a Saturday morning to work on a quilt they plan to donate to TurningPoint.  Sewing machines whirred, scissors trimmed out pieces, irons smoothed out vibrant fabric and a quilt emerged.  Each participant had selected a pattern name or shape that was particularly meaningful in her journey through breast cancer. Contact Amy Glass for future quilting projects.
Allison Baker (c) transformed her annual Mardi Gras event into a pink party to benefit TurningPoint.  In response to several neighbors who have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer,  Alison galvanized the Alpharetta Seven Oaks neighborhood and women's tennis groups into a fundraising evening of fun.  Allison is shown with Board Member Kathy Smith (l) and Executive Director Jill Binkley.

We are pleased to announce the addition of Colleen Berry (pictured playing in the recent snow with son Kaden) as a volunteer Physical Therapist at TurningPoint. Colleen has a strong background in orthopaedic physical therapy. We met Colleen at our course last fall, where the TurningPoint staff were instructors on  specialized breast cancer rehabilitation to physical therapists and other healthcare providers.  Colleen has since completed a week long mentorship at TurningPoint, increasing her knowledge about breast cancer rehabilitation and is now volunteering and working alongside our physical therapists.

Dr. Kim Lipscomb McDaniel, MS, MD, a native of Jacksonville, AL, is a board certified OB/GYN and Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist in private practice at Northside Maternal-Fetal Specialists.

A family and personal experience with breast cancer drives her passion to educate women about early breast cancer detection, as well as educate and support breast cancer patients through treatment and healing.  Her personal experience with TurningPoint was essential to her recovery and return to normal activities. She resides in Atlanta, is married and has a teenage daughter.

QUESTIONING NUTRITION

March Nutrition Q&A

Q: With it being cold and flu season, should I be taking extra vitamin C to keep me healthy and free of sickness?

A: Helpful and readily available!

Vitamin C also known as ascorbic acid is abundant in fruits and vegetables.   Vitamin C helps in the repair of tissues, protects against heart disease and aids in iron absorption.  Vitamin C may also help protect you from a variety of cancers by fighting free radicals, but the main reason people take extra Vitamin C is to boost their immune system to help fight the common cold. The RDI (Recommended Daily Intake) for adults is:  Men 90 mg/day and Women 75 mg/day which is easily achieved via food sources and, for most, supplementation is not necessary. High doses of vitamin C (greater than 2000 mg/day) may contribute to kidney stone formation as well as cause severe diarrhea, nausea, and gastritis.  I encourage my clients to eat a variety of vitamin C containing foods daily to ensure they meet their needs.  The following are good sources:

Green peppers:  184 mg, Guava: 377mg per cup, Kale: 80 mg per cup, Broccoli: 132 mg per cup, Strawberries: 98 mg per cup, Oranges: 68 mg per orange, Tomatoes:  55 mg per cup, Kiwi: 64 mg/per fruit, Papaya:  88 mg/cup.

Q: If I have normal blood pressure do I still need to watch my sodium intake?

A: Notice that salt!

Contrary to what most people think, sodium intake does need to be monitored even if blood pressure is normal.  After the age of 30, your arteries get stiffer and less able to widen when they need to, potentially increasing your risk of heart attack.   The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends that individuals consume no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, and that certain groups (African Americans, people over the age of 51 and anyone with high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease) limit intake to 1,500 milligrams per day.  To help cut back on sodium intake, ditch the salt shaker and replace salt with fresh/dried herbs, lemon juice and fresh ground pepper.
