February 2015
Care. Compassion. Clinical Excellence.
In This Issue

February is a time for love. This might mean sharing a special evening with your partner, making valentine cookies with your grandchildren, or reaching out to a lonely neighbor with a hug and a cup of coffee. It is also a time where body image and sexuality concerns may be felt most acutely by a woman going through breast cancer.

The impact of breast cancer on body image and sexuality is well documented, but poorly addressed in the medical world. Each February, our educational event focuses on this important topic. Breast cancer survivors have an opportunity to participate in this complimentary seminar led by our TurningPoint counselor. Women will leave with some practical suggestions and new ways to think about their concerns - and know that they are not alone

Adapting to the Changes

Research shows that most women who have breast cancer experience challenges in the areas of body image and sexuality, yet these are topics many are reluctant to discuss with their health care team.  This program will be an opportunity to learn more about and discuss these issues.  Topics will include the physical and emotional changes that typically result from going through breast cancer treatment and ways to cope and heal.

PATIENT PERSPECTIVE

Patient Perspective

Rachel Davidson

I had my first mammogram at age 32.  It would be my last.  The mastectomy took care of that. Young.  Not overweight.  Breastfed two babies.  I was low risk in every sense.  It was the beginning of breast cancer awareness month.  I was aware and did what I was supposed to do.  None of the medical professionals expected that little lump to actually be cancer.  However, 2 days after the biopsy the doctor confirmed I had joined the club no one wants to join.  Breast cancer awareness month felt like a celebration and I was in no mood to celebrate.  Or see all the pink.  Just over a year later, I am beginning to again appreciate breast cancer awareness month... And pink.

EVIDENCE UPDATE

Body Image and Sexuality:
You are Not Alone!

Breast cancer and its treatments may affect sexual functioning based on physiological and psychosocial mechanisms. A recent study examined various aspects of sexual and psychosocial functioning in 149 women with breast cancer. Of interest is that they also compared sexual function with an equal number of women of the same age who did not have breast cancer.

Compared to before surgery and to women without breast cancer, women after breast cancer reported significantly more problems with sexual desire and arousal six months after surgery. Problems were greater for women who had mastectomy versus lumpectomy. Read about the study and discover a positive impact breast cancer had on some relationships.

TURNING-POINTS
New Face in the Office!
New Face on the Board!

You may notice the wonderful and lovely new addition to our front desk, Maureen, known as "Mo", Fitzpatrick.  Mo is thrilled to join the team at TurningPoint! Originally from Georgia, she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Boston University in May 2014 and happily returned to the warm weather to pursue her acting career. She discovered a love of caregiving to cancer patients through her mother, who unfortunately lost her battle with Stage IV breast cancer in February 2014. Mo has a passion for Fitness and Nutritional Healing, theatre and film, traveling and the outdoors, and taking care of her pug, Roxie.

We are pleased to announce an addition to the TurningPoint Board of Directors:  Bonnie Brevick.   Bonnie has resided in Georgia for the past 33 years having moved from the New York/New Jersey area with her husband Bernie and twin sons. Her sons now have their own families, who also reside in Georgia. She has a BA degree from The American College and has been designing residential as well as commercial spaces for the past 28 years. Her strong desire to be an integral part of TurningPoint stems from the fact that she is a former patient and also that her mother had had breast cancer as well as liver cancer.

Wonderful volunteers recently helped assemble and prepare Pink Affair invitations for mailing.  TurningPoint has many wonderful supporters who give of their time, talent and treasure to insure that the specialized rehabilitation care that TurningPoint offers is available to all women with breast cancer, regardless of their ability to pay.  Many thanks to those who give so generously to our organization.

A big THANKS to Amena MItchell who dropped by the clinic to present a check from the sales of her catchy t-shirt design "size doesn't matter, finding the cure does" www.atmitchellgroup.com.  Designed to raise awareness of breast cancer and benefit TurningPoint, Amena wanted to express her appreciation for the care she received as a patient at TurningPoint.  Awesome gesture, Amena!

QUESTIONING NUTRITION

Nutrition Q&A

Q:  Many of my friends are doing a detox diet for the New Year and want me to join them.  They say that my body needs to flush out the toxins.  is this true?  Are detox diets safe?

A: Beware of the hype!

Detox diets are quite popular these days. With all the health benefits they claim, we almost feel we're doing our body an injustice if we DON'T do them.   Truth of the matter is, they are NOT proven to do as they say, and in some cases can even be detrimental.   TRUTH:  you may lose a couple of pounds following a detox diet because they are usually extremely low in calories.   FALSE:  The idea that your body needs help getting rid of toxins has no basis in human biology.  Your body detoxifies itself through your organs and immune system, no matter what you eat.   Lastly, detox diets can be detrimental to those with chronic diseases such as diabetes, Crohn's and colitis, and hypertension.

Q: What are sugar alcohols?

A: You don't need ID...

Sugar alcohols are one type of reduced calorie sweetener.  They are used in chewing gum, ice cream, sugar free cookies etc.  On the positive side, sugar alcohols provide fewer calories than sugar and have less effect on blood glucose, but they can also have a laxative effect for some and cause others gastric distress.  Examples of sugar alcohols:  erythritol, glycerol, isomalt, lactitol, maltitol, mannitol, sorbitol and xylitol.  Please note: even though they are called sugar alcohols, they do not contain alcohol at all.
