TURNINGPOINT EDUCATION EVENT

Lunch & Learn
Food Fight!
Fighting Breast Cancer Recurrence with Food
Presented by:
Lisa Eisele, RD, CSO, LD, TurningPoint Dietitian

Friday, January 23, 2015

11:30am - 1:00pm  |  Whole Foods Market at Avalon

Join TurningPoint Dietitian Lisa Eisele and Chef Samantha at the NEW Whole Foods Location at Avalon in Alpharetta in a healthy cooking class that includes lunch!

As a breast cancer survivor, it's important know what to do to decrease your chance of recurrence and to stay as healthy as you can.  Food plays a large role in this fight.  TurningPoint's dietitian, Lisa Eisele, along with Chef Samantha Enzmann have planned a healthy, cancer fighting menu.  The menu includes ingredients such as kamut and quinoa, two non-traditional grains, that are not only high in protein, but are great cancer fighters. Lisa will be discussing simple ways to make everyday eating as healthy as can be, while Chef Samantha will show us that eating healthy does not need to be labor intensive.

PATIENT PERSPECTIVE

Patient Perspective

Wynetta Scott-Simmons

I have always enjoyed learning; possessed a healthy thirst for the power of and comfort found in knowledge. That thirst led me to enroll in an elective high school class that explored world religions. It was in that class that I was introduced to the concept of karma. As a result of my teenager-framed interpretation of this life view, during those formative years, and in fear of upsetting the balance of my personal life continuum, I have worked to live by a religious-based moral compass and have also been a self-proclaimed rule follower ever since. Anyone who knows me will tell you that my life mantra is - Carpe Diem! But do no harm - live smart, live honorably, live fully present, live healthy, and ultimately live happy; chief among these has always been an endeavor to live healthy.

Each year I scheduled my annual physical to occur on or near my birthday, as a symbolic gift and proof of my smart and healthy living. My 56th year was no exception. My life, to that point, had been a living blueprint of the stay healthy tips promoted by the American Cancer Society

EVIDENCE UPDATE

The Angelina Jolie Effect:  The Public Impact of Celebrity Breast Cancer

A recent research study examined the impact of Angelina Jolie's announcement related to breast cancer. In May of 2013, the actress announced she underwent a double mastectomy to reduce the risk of breast cancer, after testing positive for a BRCA1 gene mutation.

According to this study, this announcement triggered a significant rise in the number of women with a family history of breast cancer being tested for the mutation, and this increase persisted for the next 5 months. The findings show that when it comes to health news starring a high profile celebrity, it can have a long lasting effect on the health of the general public.

Pay It Forward!

A big thanks goes out to the Lumpkin County High School cheerleaders and sponsors who participated in an October Pink-Out , selling T-Shirts and baked goods. They have dedicated their fundraising efforts to benefit TurningPoint.

We are often asked by our patients "How can I best support TurningPoint?" A unique way is to recommend or introduce TurningPoint to grant agencies and foundations you are familiar with.  Helping TP establish a connection that may grow into a relationship over the years, is a wonderful way to "Pay It Forward" to support other women with breast cancer.

QUESTIONING NUTRITION

December Nutrition Q&A

Q:  Is coconut oil really a healthy alternative to other oils on the market?

A: Beware of the hype!

For the past several years coconut oil has been marketed as a "wonder oil".  Marketers claim that coconut oil provides an array of health benefits due mainly from the medium chain-fatty acids (MCFA) it contains. Medium chain-fatty acids are less readily absorbed compared to longer-chain fatty acids, and MCFA's have been shown to have less of an effect on LDL (bad cholesterol).  With that being said, coconut oil is still a saturated fat.  Over 90% of coconut oil is saturated.  Even when we subtract the amount of MCFA's it possesses it still registers at 45% saturated.   Coconut oil may sound like a better alternative based on those numbers, but think of it like this:  Lard, the most "feared" fat of all is only 43% saturated in comparison, and we all know lard is not a health food. So, to answer your question, coconut oil is not a healthy alternative.   There isn't enough reliable research out there to support the use of coconut oil and health, especially at the quantities we are consuming these days.   Until further reliable research is presented, I generally tell my patients to use caution when it comes to the use of coconut oil.

Q: I am not fond of drinking plain water, but love LaCroix flavored sparkling water.   A friend of mine said carbonated beverages are not good for me, is this true?  Should I stop drinking LaCroix?

A: Drink Up!

Carbonated beverages such as soda are made using phosphoric acid.  Phosphoric acid, in addition to the caffeine those beverages may contain, has been shown to block calcium absorption.  The good news is that LaCroix does not use phosphoric acid during processing. Additionally, LaCroix is caffeine free, sugar free and sodium free.
