A Patient's Thoughts on Supporting TurningPoint...

TurningPoint is a warm and wonderful place. It is like an oasis in a huge desert of doctors, surgeries, needles and tests. The work they do is ground-breaking, and it will have a significant impact on your recovery.

TurningPoint needs our financial support to provide care to women in financial need and to continue to offer their many complimentary programs for women with breast cancer. Please give generously to their annual campaign.

PATIENT PERSPECTIVE

Peggy Titus-Hall

Patient Perspective

I'm a career coach and consultant.  I love gardening, photography, and recently I started quilting.  I am preparing for my scuba diving certification at 62!  I am also a breast cancer survivor.  I had negative breast biopsies in the past, but during my last biopsy I had a feeling things were different. After multiple biopsies and clinical tests I received a stage 2 cancer diagnosis.  I consulted a close friend who is also a breast surgeon, and opted for a bilateral mastectomy with expanders for reconstruction.

After surgery the discomfort seemed intolerable.  A colleague as well as friends recommended TurningPoint. My left arm was virtually immobile from the lymph node removal. Being left handed, I was terrified that I would continue to have limited use of my arm. Upon arrival at TurningPoint I was greeted with warmth and kindness.

EVIDENCE UPDATE

Broccoli Sprouts and Cruciferous Vegetables

While there is no single food or dietary supplement that acts as a "magic bullet" to reduce the risk of breast cancer and breast cancer recurrence, there is exciting research related to cruciferous vegetables and breast cancer. The cruciferous family of vegetables includes broccoli, broccoli sprouts, cauliflower, kale, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. Their nutritional value related to cancer has been studied extensively since the early 1990's.

Cruciferous vegetables are especially rich in phytochemicals. Phytochemicals protect the body from certain types of cancer. Cruciferous vegetables are particularly high in two phytochemicals known as glucoraphanin and sulforaphane. Glucoraphanin neutralizes cancer-causing chemicals before they can damage the cell's DNA and sulforaphane has been shown to improve the liver's ability to detoxify carcinogens and other toxic compounds.

Honors TurningPoint

TurningPoint's November course on Breast Cancer Rehabilitation was a great success and drew physical and occupational therapists from across Georgia, many other states and The Bahamas. TurningPoint's goal is to increase the number of therapists who understand and are able to care for breast cancer survivorship issues in an evidence-based and compassionate manner. The course was taught by TurningPoint clinicians along with Dr. Pam Levangie. Pam is a Professor at MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston and a member of TurningPoint's Medical Advisory Board.

Many thanks to course sponsors - It's The Journey and The Oncology Section of the American Physical Therapy Association.

CJ Barber (l) and Joan Hug (r), of the Alpharetta Athletic Club Ladies Golf Association, presented TurningPoint's Renee Vaughn a check for the proceeds of the golf tournament they hosted this fall, which benefited TurningPoint. This tournament has honored TurningPoint over the years as beneficiary of the fundraiser.  Many thanks to the ladies and men who golfed to support our mission.
QUESTIONING NUTRITION

December Nutrition Q&A

Q: Does biotin really help my hair and nails grow?

A: Biotin is also known as Vitamin H.

Biotin, a water soluable vitamin,  is necessary for cell growth, the production of fatty acids, and the metabolism of fats and amino acids. Biotin assists in various metabolic reactions involving the transfer of carbon dioxide. It may also be helpful in maintaining a steady blood sugar level. Biotin is often recommended as a dietary supplement for strengthening hair and nails, though scientific data supporting this outcome are weak.  The RDI for Biotin is 30 mcg.  If you are taking biotin supplements watch for these signs of possible overdose:  skin rashes, lower vitamin C and B6 levels and high blood sugar levels.

Q: What is the calorie difference of carbohydrates, protein and fat?

A: Carbs and Protein win!

Per gram, carbohydrates and protein supply the body with 4 calories per gram.  Fat on the other hand provides 9 calories.  When on a calorie restriction diet it is important to cut back on the amount of fat you consume which can drastically reduce your calorie intake.  When discussing calories, we can't forget to mention alcohol calories.  Gram per gram, alcohol provides us with about the same amount of calories as fat does, weighing in at 7 calories per gram. Something to keep in mind this holiday season when alcohol consumption generally increases.
