November 2014
Care. Compassion. Clinical Excellence.
In This Issue
From our Executive Director
Jill Binkley, PT, MSc, CLT
The season of giving is upon us. Each year at this time, we reach out to you for support of our annual fundraising campaign.

In 2014, TurningPoint will serve 400 new patients and 250 patients returning for ongoing issues. This is a 25% increase in patients compared to last year! We continue to provide financial assistance to over 40% of those we serve and many of our programs are complimentary. With more survivors served this year, there is an increased need for funding to sustain our level of care.

It is the time of year that our thoughts turn to giving and gratefulness. I am deeply grateful for all who believe in and sustain our mission. I hope that you will consider making a donation to TurningPoint's annual campaign - with your generosity we can continue to offer support, comfort and hope to breast cancer survivors and their families in the coming year.

TURNINGPOINT EDUCATION EVENT
Holiday Survival Guide
Presented by Lisa Eisele, RD, CSO, LD

Monday, November 3, 2014

10:00am - 11:00am  |  TurningPoint Clinic

Don't be one of the millions of Americans who will gain 5-10 pounds this holiday season.  As a breast cancer survivor it is  important to keep your weight as close to ideal as possible. Weight gain can increase your risk of breast cancer recurrence and increase the risk of lymphedema.

PATIENT PERSPECTIVE

November Patient Perspective

Ashley Franks

Every pain and suffering in this life has a purpose.  I truly believe that you can find hope and peace in any situation through not only family and friends, but God.

I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer at the age of 32 in December of 2013.  My husband Matt and I had only been living in the Atlanta area for less than two years.  At the time, we had a son Roman (4yr), a daughter Carmen (2yr), and a son Hudson (7 month).  If I hadn't been nursing Hudson, I probably wouldn't have noticed the tumor as soon as I did.  I was all too familiar with cancer.  My mother survived ovarian cancer during my high school years and then I lost my father to prostate cancer in 2003.  Little did I know, I too would be diagnosed exactly ten years later.

EVIDENCE UPDATE

Exercise for Breast Cancer Survivors: How much is enough?

Early detection and improved treatments for breast cancer have resulted in better prognosis for patients.   A recent review of research related to physical activity and breast cancer confirmed that exercise decreases risk of recurrence, increases quality of life, bone mineral density and strength and decreases fatigue and pain in breast cancer survivors. The study concluded that based on scientific data, breast cancer patients should be recommended to participate in rehabilitation programs including aerobic and strength training.(1) Many breast cancer survivors, however, are not sure how and when to proceed and 'how much is enough' exercise.

QUESTIONING NUTRITION

November Nutrition Q&A

Q: I just found out my 4 year old son is allergic to eggs.  His birthday is coming up in December and I would love to bake him a cake.  What can I use in place of eggs?

A: Egg substitutes in baking.

When baking, try either of these options:

Any type of pureed fruit such as banana or applesauce. Use ¼ cup fruit puree for every egg you are replacing.  Another option is to take 1 tablespoon ground flax seed and mix into 3 tablespoons water.  Make sure the mixture has gelled before using it.

Q: What has more nutritional value, the apple peel or the flesh?  I love apples but hate the peel!

A: Go for it all!

You may be shocked to find out that the peel is more nutrient dense than the flesh itself. Apple peels contain more antioxidant compounds, especially the phytonutrient quercetin.  Apple peel may also have higher antioxidant activity and higher bioactivity than the flesh. Research showed that apples without the peels have less antioxidant activity than apples with the peels, so don't throw away the good stuff the next time you grab for an apple.
