August Nutrition Nugget:

Don't skip breakfast. When you wake up in the morning, your body is running on fumes. Eating a breakfast with protein, carbs, and healthy fat kicks your metabolism into high gear and provides energy for the day.

Dragon Boat Atlanta
Come Join Us!
Interested in getting some vigorous exercise and enjoying the companionship of fellow breast cancer survivors?  You might want to try Dragon Boating, a team sport where 10 or 20 members paddle together for practice and in races.

Dragon Boat Atlanta is one of the many teams worldwide who race to raise awareness of breast cancer and promote exercise as contributing to a healthy lifestyle for women diagnosed with breast cancer.
Dragon Boat Atlanta is participating in an International Dragon Boat Festival October 24-26, 2014 in Sarasota, FL.

Two slots are still open for breast cancer survivors who want to join the team.  Practice is weekly, held at Lake Lanier Rowing and Canoeing Center.

Patient Perspective:
Cheryl Jugovic

No offense to the pink, but after receiving my diagnosis I was focused on 1st place and wanted nothing less than a 1st Place Blue Ribbon.  The battle was on and I hit the enemy with chemo, double mastectomy, and radiation.  In the course of my blue ribbon campaign, I discovered a three things that truly have impacted the quality of my life today:  TurningPoint, yoga, and smoothies.  The TurningPoint team absolutely knows their stuff.  Initially I attributed some of my pain to the aftermath of the battle and something I just had to live with.  TurningPoint changed that for me.

I'm confident they make a life changing difference for all of their patients.  Thank you TurningPoint for being part of my Blue Ribbon team!  Read more about Cheryl's campaign.

We want to tell you about a research project that changed our lives. Two decades ago, women treated for breast cancer were cautioned not to exercise or use their arm 'too much' because it could cause lymphedema. Then, 20 brave breast cancer survivors, led by researchers Dr. Don McKenzie and one of our own TurningPoint advisory board members, Dr. Susan Harris, PT, set out to prove that the warning was not accurate. Women trained hard as dragon boat team members for a year, while lymphedema and strength were measured by the researchers. At the end of the year, there were no new cases of lymphedema and in women with lymphedema, their swelling did not increase.

Since that time, new research has demonstrated that exercise is not only safe for women following breast cancer, but is important in reducing lymphedema risk and risk of recurrence. The research project that changed the world of breast cancer survivorship became a cause about wellness and exercise after breast cancer, the foundation of TurningPoint's approach to breast cancer rehabilitation. Dragonboat Atlanta, a Georgia breast cancer team, is part of this worldwide movement. We hope you'll consider joining the team - more information in this newsletter!

Evidence Update:  Low Level Laser Therapy

Low level laser therapy (LLLT) is a form of treatment that uses low-power laser, a form of focused infra-red light technology, to alter cellular function.  LLLT is very different from high-power lasers and surgical lasers which cut or remove tissue.  There has been a

significant amount of research examining the effects of LLLT on cell  biology, pain, scar tissue, wound healing and lymphedema.  A number of centers in the United States and Australia have been using LLLT for the treatment of side effects of breast cancer-related treatment.

We are excited that TurningPoint is now able to offer low level laser therapy and are incorporating it into our physical therapy treatment options for the side effects of breast cancer treatment. Read more...
