Evidence Update

Axillary Web Syndrome (Cording) after Breast Surgery

A recent systematic review of clinical studies that look at the frequency of shoulder and arm problems after breast cancer found that loss of shoulder motion and strength, pain, numbness and axillary web syndrome were common problems. The paper found that a considerable number of patients still suffer from those impairments more than 2 years after surgery.  The study examined the effects of both sentinel node biopsy and axillary lymph node dissection procedures.

or fruit with salad greens.

Great Birthday Present!

Hitesh Patel just celebrated his 40th birthday, and wanted to do something different.  In lieu of birthday presents, he requested donations to a cause that would honor his mother, Savita Patel, a breast cancer survivor.  He selected TurningPoint as the  fortunate beneficiary of his generosity. Thank you Hitesh and thank you Savita, for raising such a generous son!

When people think about TurningPoint, they think of women supporting women. I was moved when I saw the photo below. It reminds me of the multitude of men who are behind the scenes but critical to TurningPoint's mission to serve women with breast cancer. My husband, Alan, has been there from the beginning, supporting the organization as it grew. Since then, many men have stepped up to the plate to donate their time, talent and treasure, including board and committee members, staff spouses and family members, volunteers, donors, event sponsors and attendees.

Our upcoming golf tournament is a great way to support the organization, and have a great day on the golf course at the same time. The Sunday night dinner and auction is a fun evening, and we hope you will join us whether you are golfing on Monday. The theme of the auction this year is Great Food, Great Wine, Great Experiences. You can count on more great auction items this year! See you there!

Patient Perspective:  Taurus Dotson

Since participating in the TurningPoint program, I have learned so much about my recovery process. I have learned to take deep breaths again and how to stretch and strengthen my core muscles in order to walk upright again. There is so much to learn in order to regain a 100% normal life. I am "Turning the Point" to recovery! Big Thanks to Cathy and Anita for all your help.

Educating Healthcare Providers

Advocating for increased awareness of the need for and the specialized nature of breast cancer rehabilitation is part of our mission and we are always thrilled to share our knowledge of best practices in the field.

Amanda Peterson, DPT (sitting) with TurningPoint's Cathy Furbish, DPT, CLT

Amanda Peterson, DPT and recent Physical Therapy graduate from Duke
University, completed an Advanced Clinical Practicum at TurningPoint in June. Amanda remarks: "Thank you for the opportunity to come to TurningPoint and learn and be mentored by such an outstanding staff. You have created a peaceful and refreshing working environment for both the staff and patients. I truly value the insightful knowledge I gained during my week at TurningPoint and look forward to carrying that knowledge forward for my professional career in oncological rehab."

TurningPoint also welcomed international visitors Dr. Natasha Thakur from India and Dr. Angela Cala from Colombia last month.  As part of the Avon Scholars program, they are working with Dr. Sheryl Gabram at the Avon Breast Center at Grady Hospital. TurningPoint is participating in an ongoing project funded by the Avon Foundation to implement and evaluate the prospective surveillance model for breast cancer rehabilitation at Grady. TurningPoint was instrumental in developing the model with the American Cancer Society.

What we Learned at Lunch!
Chef Samantha entertained us with great information at our June Nutrition Lunch and Learn event, held at Salud! Cooking School at Harry's Farmers Market.  In addition to healthy eating tips, Chef Samantha shared cooking techniques, interesting tidbits on spices not commonly used and attendees were treated to some luscious recipes and a tasty lunch. TurningPoint's staff dished up some helpful advice on nutrients and their benefit in our diet. Also served up were tips on growing herbs and vegetables. Attendee Khalilah Epps, above, won a lovely basil plant to provide her with tasty summer eating and a home grown source for her pesto recipe. Watch our newsletter for upcoming fun and educational events, all provided through the generosity of our Community Partners.
