Harvest for Health:

Gardening for Cancer Survivors

Improving health behaviors and keeping a healthy lifestyle can benefit cancer survivors. A study was done that paired adult and child cancer survivors (four adults with breast cancer) with Master Gardeners. The cancer survivors participated in vegetable gardening. The purpose of the study was to explore the effects of this activity on the survivors' fruit and vegetable intake as well as levels of physical activity, quality-of-life and physical function

Come to our June
Lunch & Learn (info at right) for some gardening tips for growing plants to liven up your meals.

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, I was referred to TurningPoint for physical therapy. The treatment provided at TurningPoint allowed me to get back to my true love - golf. It was only natural that I wanted to participate in the inaugural Tourney for TurningPoint Golf Tournament four years ago. I had such a wonderful time that I ended up joining the tournament planning committee.

When my husband was transferred to Houston two years ago, it was important to me to maintain my commitment to support TurningPoint, so I  have returned every year for the Tourney. This is a great tournament for all skill levels, for men and women. Please join me in August to support TurningPoint's mission of helping breast cancer survivors get back to what they are passionate about!

Patient Perspective:  Denise Boyd

...I was tired all the time, hunched over and had very little range of motion in my shoulders, arms and back.  I have three young children and wanted to regain my energy and life back.  TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation was literally the "turning point" for me in my ongoing recovery.  Working with Lauren and Anita, I feel like a new person.

TuTu Too Much Fun!
TurningPoint Team at the Komen Atlanta Race for the Cure!
The rain held off for the more than 40 "racers" who signed up for the TurningPoint team to walk the 5k course at the 2014 Komen Race for the Cure.  Lenox Square was festive and inspired the race participants.  Sporting tutu's and fun face paint, we rallied behind our great team leader, Lauren Bober.  Many thanks to our patients, family members and friends who walked with us. Komen Atlanta has been a long time grantor and partner of TurningPoint and we look forward to continuing our 10 year Race for the Cure tradition with an even larger team next year!
TurningPoint Educates Healthcare Providers
TurningPoint continues to be recognized as a center of excellence in the breast cancer rehabilitation field. In May, physical therapist and breast cancer survivor Elizabeth Gilstrap, PT, DPT (left) completed an Advanced Clinical Practicum at TurningPoint with our staff in preparation for opening a cancer rehabilitation unit in Augusta, GA.  Nutrition interns Melissa Kappel (c) and Sandra Ruan (r), from Southern Regional Medical Center, also spent time in the clinic, working with our nutritionist Julie Schwartz.  Advocating for increased awareness of the need for and the specialized nature of breast cancer rehabilitation is part of our mission and we are always thrilled to share our knowledge of best practices in the field.

Care. Compassion. Clinical Excellence.
