Evidence Update:   Reaching Women with Breast Cancer in Rural Communities

There are many challenges faced by breast cancer survivors, including physical, medical and psychological.  A 2012 study showed that there is a significantly higher rate of obesity in rural breast cancer survivors.  Obesity contributes to the challenges after treatment, including a higher rate of breast cancer recurrence, body image struggles and lymphedema.   See how the study addressed these issues and how TurningPoint can help achieve a better quality of life after diagnosis and treatment.

In recognition of March being National Nutrition Month, look for a new monthly feature in our newsletter: a tip shared by TP's Dietitian, Julie Schwartz.  She is whipping up important information to share with us.

Patient Perspective:  Monica Santamaria

My name is Monica Santamaria and I am a breast cancer survivor.  I am married to my best friend and most amazing husband Conrad Santamaria and I am the mother of two beautiful children.   At the end of October, 2012, I found a very small lump in my left breast during a self-exam.  I called and made an appointment for my first mammogram ever.  That little lump turned out to be a 9 cm mass with enlarged lymph nodes.

The impact of chemotherapy, the surgery and the sudden onset of menopause left my body in terrible condition.  I was very active before I was diagnosed.  I was desperate to be active again but I honestly didn't think I would ever be able to do the things I used to do.  I had lost hope.  Read more of Monica's story and how TurningPoint has helped her regain her active life.
