Evidence Update:   Quality of Life in Long-term Breast Cancer Survivors Studied

A breast cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment clearly impacts a woman's quality of life. Due to widespread screening and effective treatments for breast cancer, there has been a marked improvement in survival rates. There were approximately 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States in 2012. As a result, there has been interest in documenting the quality of life (QOL) of those survivors.  Read the encouraging results of the recently published study.

Staff Changes at TurningPoint

Our beloved Marcia Pearl has once again shown us how to live life to the fullest as she retires for the second time! Marcia was a founding member of the TurningPoint Board of Directors, serving on the board before she retired (for the first time) as Director of the Physical Therapy program at Georgia State University.  She continued to be a member of TurningPoint's board, serving as board chair the last few years. Marcia joined the staff of TurningPoint after retiring from teaching and has helped hundreds of women regain strength and mobility after breast cancer treatment. Our board, staff and patients will truly miss Marcia, and the experience, wisdom, humor and joy she brought to TurningPoint.

Leslie Myszka joined our physical therapy staff in January. Leslie is a native New Yorker and received her physical therapy degree from NYU. Leslie has extensive experience in neurological and

orthopedic physical therapy, and is excited and passionate about providing excellent care to women affected by breast cancer.

Leslie and her husband, Ed, have been married for 27 years. They are the very proud parents of three wonderful sons. Leslie enjoys travel and all of the Myszka family are self-proclaimed coffee connoisseurs and "foodies." Being the lone woman in a house full of men, Leslie relishes the "girl time" she spends with her friends while shopping and participating in women's bible studies.  True to her NYC upbringing, Leslie is an avid attender of many live events like concerts, dramatic plays, and Broadway musicals.

As a nine year breast cancer survivor, Leslie became interested in the breast cancer rehabilition field when she participated in TurningPoint's courses for rehab professionals. Leslie was overwhelmed with the recent advances and evidence of the positive outcomes reached by women after they received care specific to the needs of women with breast cancer.  Leslie's breast cancer journey was life changing, and she learned so much about her own inner strength and resilience during her recovery. She hopes to be able to encourage her patients to pursue similar self discovery as she uses her clinical skills to help patients' return to activities they enjoy. Welcome Leslie!

Patient Perspective:
Laura Mara

My plastic surgeon referred me to TurningPoint.  Over the first three months I met with Cathy and Anita.  Early on I didn't know if the pain and discomfort I was experiencing was to become my "new normal."  We discussed what my life was like before surgery.  They assured me that physical therapy was going to help me to feel better and would get me back on the road to doing what I had done before...
