New Year's celebrations take on new meaning for those of us who have battled breast cancer. For many of us, we are thankful for the blessing of another year. For others, 2013 will be remembered as the year that breast cancer changed their lives. For some families, it is the year that they lost their loved one to breast cancer - and we have grieved with you. For others we serve, hope is still needed as they continue their battle into 2014. The TurningPoint staff is honored to have been part of so many women's journeys over the past year.

Patient Perspective:  Amy Glass

By the time I got to TurningPoint, it was a year and a half after my double mastectomy with reconstruction followed by a hysterectomy four months later (because I tested positive for the BRCA1 gene.) My diagnosis, the surgeries, getting a new job the week of my mastectomy, sending my oldest daughter off to college....it all happened so quickly, there wasn't much time to react, only time to plow forward, one foot in front of the other. I went on like that, thinking I must be Superwoman, for about a year until my oncologist said "you don't need to come back for six months." I remember thinking, "Are you serious? Who's going to make sure I'm okay and nothing else is wrong with me?" That's when I hit a wall... Read more about Amy's story
Evidence Update:  Benefits of Massage Therapy for Breast Cancer Survivors
Typically, massage therapy is regarded as a relaxing, luxurious experience, but the therapeutic benefits are often overlooked. Research has found that oncology massage therapy is helpful in managing the side effects of cancer treatment, including reducing anxiety, fatigue, nausea, pain and increasing immune function and well-being.

In a recent study, breast cancer patients world-wide were examined to determine whether massage therapy could provide benefits in breast cancer-related symptoms. This study included 950 participants in 18 different randomized controlled trials, and concluded that the participants who received massage on a regular basis had a significant reduction in fatigue and anger in comparison with the control group. The researchers suggested that further studies are needed to determine if these results hold long-term significance.

Specialized oncology massage therapy at TurningPoint combines the healing power of touch with an understanding of breast cancer treatment side effects as part of a coordinated rehabilitation team effort.

Julie Schwartz, TurningPoint's Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Advocates Nationally on Obesity and Weight Management

In addition to her role at TurningPoint, Julie is Chair of the Weight Management Practice Group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Last summer, Julie and several other leaders of the Weight Management Practice Group were asked to represent the Academy in advocacy efforts in Washington, D.C. Along with leaders from the Obesity Society, The American College of Surgeons and several other organizations, Julie worked to gain support for the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, a bi-partisan bill in committees that would lead the way for insurance reimbursement for the prevention and treatment of obesity. This was exciting and the efforts continue to move the bill to the House and Senate floors for discussion and voting. Many women gain significant weight during and after their breast cancer treatment. Women who are overweight have increased risk of breast cancer recurrence as well as increased risk of lymphedema. We are excited that Julie's expertise is available to our TurningPoint patients who struggle with weight gain - you are NOT alone!
