Mindful Eating through the Holidays
|

The average American gains 1 - 3 pounds during the holiday season, followed by a resolve to lose weight and get healthy. Learning to live mindfully, living present in each moment, especially in relationship to food and eating, can make a difference in weight and health. Mindful eating can help you navigate the temptations and emotional eating during the holidays, as well as throughout the year.

During this season of giving, join us in celebrating the many lives you have touched through your involvement with TurningPoint. We value your tireless efforts to support us as we continue to give hope to the many breast cancer survivors in our care. I joined the TurningPoint Board of Directors two years ago after learning of the organization from our current chair, Marcia Pearl. The passion and commitment I found in TurningPoint's staff, volunteers, and board members confirmed my decision to dedicate myself to its mission.
Please keep TurningPoint on your gift list this holiday season and give generously to this most noble cause. Our survivor family is stronger with your support!
With gratitude,
Dr. Theron Jones, DMD
Incoming Board Chair

Please Support TurningPoint's 2013 Annual Campaign
|
It has been a very exciting year for TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation. In 2013, we celebrated our 10th anniversary and moved to a larger clinic, with needed meeting space and a state-of-the-art gym.
In 2013, we provided more than 3,000 physical therapy, massage therapy, counseling and nutrition visits, served over 300 new patients and provided financial assistance to 45% of those served.
As part of our mission to make rehabilitation and exercise part of every woman's breast cancer journey, we hosted our first national conference in Atlanta with over 100 healthcare providers in attendance.
While this has been a year of change at TurningPoint, our mission remains unchanged: providing, promoting and advocating specialized and evidence-based rehabilitation care for women with breast cancer.
Your generous gift - of any amount - will give us the power to serve all women with breast cancer, regardless of their ability to pay for services. Thank you for your support in the past, and for considering our request for support once again.
Have a wonderful holiday season!

Evidence Update: Getting in Touch with the Experts
|
TurningPoint sponsored our first multidisciplinary conference for healthcare providers on November 8, 2013. The conference was co-hosted by The Oncology Section of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and supported by TurningPoint's Edith Van Riper-Haase Advocacy Fund. The conference was designed to raise awareness about current research related to survivorship issues and breast cancer rehabilitation. The ultimate goal is to inspire and equip healthcare providers to implement programs for breast cancer patients in their own community. Attendees included physicians and surgeons, physical and occupational therapists, nurses, exercise specialists and other healthcare professionals from Greater Atlanta and the Southeast, as well as many other states, Canada, England and the Bahamas.
More about the conference and additional pictures.

Patient Perspective: Nicole Yates
Getting ready to leave the house one day, I adjusted my V-neck shirt to cover my bra. My fingers hit a lump on my chest th at I knew right away shouldn't be there. I was 41. I'd worked for years with the American Cancer Society, so I was more prepared than most when the biopsy was positive.
We saw a breast surgeon first. I couldn't wait to be rid of the cancer and I expected to leave that appointment with a surgery date. Instead, we found out that the tumor was fast-growing, triple negative and at least Stage 2. The surgeon felt an enlarged lymph node under my arm that she was sure was cancerous. We were advised to find an oncologist and consider clinical trials.
After my mastectomy, I walked in to TurningPoint, hunched over and reluctant to move. Thick, painful cords ran through my arm. Lauren was confident she could help, and she did, immediately. She said, "We will get you back to doing the things you love."

Middle Schoolers Raise Breast Cancer Awareness and Donations for TurningPoint
Local 8th graders from Northwestern Middle School hosted a joint Pink Out birthday party to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness. Tyler Brady, Sammy Caldwell, Maggie Daiker and Kelli Gaston all celebrated
birthdays in the fall and winter. The girls requested donations to TurningPoint in lieu of traditional gift giving. Not only did their classmates show their support by sporting various articles of pink clothing, they brought very generous donations. Thank you, girls, for your generosity!
