Over 50% of Americans gain between 1 - 3 pounds every holiday season. We "treat" ourselves, have high exposure to temptations, and often celebrate from Halloween through the New Year. Mindful Eating incorporates mindfulness into your life at each eating event allowing people to truly enjoy their favorite foods and not gain weight. Learn how this practice will transform your holiday season into one of pleasure and not guilt.

Our patients tell us every day that the care the receive at TurningPoint is critical in getting them back to doing the things they love. Sadly, most women are not referred for rehabilitation and exercise during or after their breast cancer treatment. Our first national conference for healthcare providers on November 9, 2013 in Atlanta is part of our ongoing effort to make this part of every woman's care. The conference will feature research and clinical experts in the field of breast cancer survivorship and exercise. We hope to touch the lives of many breast cancer survivors across United States through the conference.

November kicks off our annual fundraising campaign. Please consider supporting TurningPoint. Your donation will help us continue to offer care to women with breast cancer who are in financial need. In addition, our community and healthcare provider education programs are supported by your generosity. Thank you for your generous support in the past and during this year's annual campaign.
With gratitude,
Jill Binkley, Executive Director

Please Support TurningPoint's
2013 Annual Campaign

It has been a very exciting year for TurningPoint Breast Cancer Rehabilitation.  In 2013 we celebrate our 10th anniversary with our recent move to larger and more suitable offices, with needed meeting space and a state-of-the-art gym.  We are now accessible by public transportation and more centrally located in the metro Atlanta area. We have hosted visits from medical professionals looking to emulate our model of care and services in other parts of the country and as far away as Ireland!  In early November we will host our first conference on Breast Cancer Rehabilitation and Exercise for healthcare providers.

In 2013 we will provide more than 3,000 physical therapy, massage therapy, counseling and nutrition visits, serve over 300 new patients and provide financial assistance to 45% of those served.

While we have had lots of changes at TurningPoint, our mission remains unchanged--providing, promoting and advocating specialized and evidence-based rehabilitation care for women with breast cancer.

Your generous gift - of any amount - will give us the power to serve all women with breast cancer, regardless of their ability to pay for services.  Thank you for your support in the past, and for considering our request for support once again.

Evidence in Action:     New Lymphedema Screening Program
TurningPoint is offering an exciting new screening program for lymphedema. The perometer is a state-of-the-art computerized system to measure lymphedema, or arm swelling. It was purchased through a generous donation from a former patient. Lymphedema is a side effect of breast cancer treatment that  occurs in about 20% of women. With the new system, TurningPoint will offer a screening program to promote early detection and treatment of lymphedema. Research suggests that outcomes are improved with this approach. The screening program is supported by grants and donors and will be free of charge for TurningPoint patients. For women with lymphedema, the perometer will be used to guide their care. The perometer is the first in the State of Georgia and TurningPoint's cutting edge complimentary screening program is the first in United States.

Patient Perspective:  Kathi Williams

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in December of 2012, I thought my life would change forever. It did, but not in the way I thought it would. A breast cancer diagnosis was referred to as a journey and I really didn't know the true meaning of "the journey".   The past 10 months Kathi Williams have given me the opportunity to learn about love and patience that I have not known in the 63 years of my life. This journey has blessed me in so many ways.

After my mastectomy in January, I saw a lady in the waiting room at my surgeon's office raising her arms above her head and I felt certain that I would never be able to do that again because of all the pain I was in. I was very discouraged and impatient. My surgeon suggested that I go to TurningPoint and I started physical therapy soon after my chemo treatments began. Read how TurningPoint made a difference in Kathi's life.

TurningPoint has an ongoing partnership with the Avon Breast Center at Grady Hospital with the goal of providing rehabilitation and exercise care to inner city and minority women with breast cancer. Through a grant from the Avon Foundation, the team is working on a 2-year research project to examine the benefits of physical therapy evaluation and patient education using a prospective surveillance model. Women are seen pre-operatively, in the first weeks post-operatively and then at 3-month intervals thereafter.

Educating Future Physical Therapists at Medical School of Georgia
Cathy Furbish and  GHSU Physical Therapy Students
Cathy Furbish, TurningPoint Physical Therapist and Certified Lymphedema Therapist instructed the physical therapy students enrolled at Georgia Health Sciences University this month. Cathy provided "real world" knowledge about the issues facing breast cancer patients to a class eager to learn about this field. TurningPoint educates many of Georgia's student physical therapists on the topic of breast cancer rehabilitation and exercise.
