A Tale of Two Atlanta Women Who Have Made a Difference in the Lives of Many Breast Cancer Survivor's...
Judy Suggs and Kathy Smith have a lot in common. Both are Atlanta natives. Both attended the same elementary and high schools and even worked at the same store at Lenox Square. Although they attended different colleges, Judy and Kathy ended up pledging the same sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha (ZTA). After college both returned to Atlanta, got married, had children and joined the same ZTA alumnae chapter. Oh, and one more thing - Judy and Kathy are sisters!
 | | Judy Suggs and Kathy Smith |
In 2001 their sorority alumnae chapter hosted a fundraising event in Judy's home. Proceeds would benefit ZTA's Foundation and National Philanthropy - Breast Cancer Education and Awareness. Chapter members "re-gifted" items they no longer needed and donated them for the auction. Chapter members, spouses, friends and family bid on 75 auction items, raising $1,800. And that was the beginning of The Pink Affair.
For the past 11 years, with the help of their sorority sisters, Judy and Kathy have poured their blood, sweat and tears into this event to ensure a bigger and better Pink Affair than the previous year. In total, the event has raised over $300,000 in the fight against breast cancer with 75% of the proceeds staying in the local community.
In 2007, TurningPoint Women's Healthcare was selected as one of the local beneficiaries of the Pink Affair. Almost immediately a partnership of friendship and support between the two organizations began. Through this relationship, TurningPoint has found two staunch supporters and Judy and Kathy have gotten to know many of the women who have benefited from their hard work and The Pink Affair proceeds. Kathy has joined the TurningPoint Board of Directors and both Judy and Kathy are Honorary Chairs of this year's Pink Affair.
We are honored to join forces with these amazing women this year as The Pink Affair and TurningPoint join forces so that 100% of this year's proceeds benefit TurningPoint this year and the many years ahead. See you at The Pink Affair March 9th!

Patient Perspective: Rhonda Grizzle
|
In 2007, I was a very busy, active teacher working two jobs and exercising 8-10 hours a week. My son, Tyler was a high school senior and his brother, Eli, was deployed by submarine in the Navy.
My life was changed forever as I was lining up my students for dismissal one day and received the phone call confirming breast cancer. I did not cry or get upset. Instead, I took a matter-of-fact attitude and tried to focus on clear thinking. After much research, prayer, and input from others, I chose to have a bilateral mastectomy and never looked back on that decision. After surgery I proceeded with chemo, hair loss, and radiation. I was highly at risk for lymphedema and was fitted for a compression glove and sleeve. During my recuperation prayers, cards, positive quotes, and humor were very uplifting.
A friend told me about TurningPoint. My insurance would not cover my visits, but through the financial assistance program, I was able to pay what I could afford. I discovered the compassionate, nurturing environment that greatly helped me deal with lymphedema and the lack of mobility in my right arm.
After 8 months of cancer treatment and care I returned to teaching. Due to extreme fatigue and significant "chemo brain", it was a daily struggle. I immediately realized that teaching full time was not possible for me. I was extremely fortunate to retire early on medical disability and continue my teaching career by job sharing with a wonderful co-teacher. During my recuperation and return to teaching, I worked hard to eat healthy foods, walk at least 30 minutes a day, and surround myself with positive influences. I tried to have fun with a different wigs and scarves everyday and my students and co-workers enjoyed the surprise each day!
There have been bumps in the road and I needed more surgery in 2009. In 2010, I developed lymphedema and immediately called TurningPoint. I was welcomed back; an immediate appointment was set up and all the details with my new insurance were taken care of for me. The physical therapists taught me how to manage my lymphedema well by continuing to walk, dance, lift light weights and wear a compression glove and sleeve as needed, including when I exercise. TurningPoint has been there again for me recently, when my lymphedema flared up and once again I was warmly welcomed and the physical therapist helped me get it back in control.
Because I have Triple Negative breast cancer, it is really important for me to exercise, eat healthy foods, and retain a positive attitude and outlook. Throughout my journey, I have worked very hard to be well informed in order to make the best decisions possible based on facts rather than emotions. I discovered that I am stronger than I would have imagined, and the will to survive can overcome many obstacles. I cherish each day and count my many blessings. It IS possible to survive, thrive, and continue life's journey.

Evidence Update: Massage Therapy
|
Effect of Massage Therapy on Fatigue and Mood in Breast Cancer Survivors
A recent study investigated the effects of massage on heart rate variability (HRV) and mood state and the influence of attitude towards massage in breast cancer survivors with cancer-related fatigue. One group of breast cancer survivors were given a 40 minute massage (manual therapy) by an experienced massage therapist and the other group was given education and advice on nutrition, physical activity and relaxation techniques, but no massage therapy. Each group was given a mood and attitude assessment and their heart rates were measured before and after the intervention.
The group that was given the massage showed a significant decrease in fatigue and decrease in mood disturbance after the massage. This group also showed that the manual therapy decreased tension-anxiety, depression and anger. The manual therapy led to an immediate mood improvement.
The results also suggest that the women with a healthy, positive attitude towards massage exhibited a greater reduction in depression. Massage may be a useful modality to help women who are dealing with fatigue and depression.
How can TurningPoint help you decrease fatigue, anxiety and depression? We offer massage therapy by therapists who have extensive clinical experience in caring for women during and after breast cancer treatment. Let our therapists help you to feel better!
