TurningPoint Advocates Nationally for Breast Cancer Rehabilitation!
Jill Binkley, Executive Director of TurningPoint presented at the national conference of the American Physical Therapy Association in San Diego, CA on January 22nd, 2013. Jill presented with Nicole Stout, PT, CLT-LANA, a well known researcher in the area of lymphedema and early detection and intervention for the side effects of breast cancer treatment.
Jill and Nicole presented an overview of the physical side effects of breast cancer treatment, the role of physical therapy a new model of care proposed for breast cancer rehabilitation. The model of care, supported by The American Cancer Society, advocates pre-operative, early post-operative and ongoing surveillance and treatment for issues women face during and after breast cancer treatment. Jill and Nicole worked on the steering committee with the ACS that published the model in the spring of 2012 in a special supplement to the journal Cancer (link below).
This is one of the many local and national presentations that Jill and the staff of TurningPoint have done in the past year to promote rehabilitation and exercise for all women during and after breast cancer treatment.

TurningPoint Board Member Profile: Dr. Theron Jones, DDS
|
Dr. Theron Jones was born and raised in Brunswick Georgia, on the coast. He has always shown an interest in public service and activism. Dr. Jones knew from an early age he would be in a profession helping people but not sure in what area. After enrolling at Emory University (chemistry major), his chosen field of healthcare was an easy choice but choosing the area of dentistry came after a great mentorship with the father of one of his college friends. The opportunity to use his hands, the heavy use of science based methods, and the ability to immediately affect the well being of patients were the deciding factors for choosing dentistry.
In addition to science and dentistry, Dr. Jones has a passion for public policy and health affairs. After obtaining his Master of Public Policy in Health Policy from UCLA, he interned as an assistant to the Executive Director at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, while on his summer break from dental school at the Medical College of Georgia.
Dr. Jones used his time in school to promote public health at every turn. He was the dental school's first National Health Service Corps scholar and spoke to incoming college students about the importance of good health as a public service. After dental school, he began his residency in New Orleans (until Hurricane Katrina) and then finished an externship serving in the immigrant communities of central Massachusetts. Determined to help his community, he was appointed as an adviser to the Worcester City Council and volunteered to speak on Oral Cancer Initiatives for the American Cancer Society.
Upon returning to Georgia to begin his private practice, Sandtown Family Dentistry, Dr. Jones remains active in public service. He is a member of the Emory College Alumni Board and a board member of the Kudos Foundation, which helps underprivileged youth work towards their goal of entering the healthcare professions. He is very active in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and serves in several capacities in their public service oriented programs. He also serves as fund-raising chair for the North Georgia Dental Society, where he has been a proud member since 2004. He is also a member of the American Dental Association and the Georgia Dental Association.
Along with serving the American Cancer Society, Dr. Jones has been personally affected by cancer within his family. Several members of his family have been lost to cancer, including his mother at the age of 35.
 | | Theron and Deyanda Jones |
Knowing the impact that cancer can be for families, Dr. Jones has continued to commit his time and efforts to aiding the cancer awareness community. Dr. Jones met Marcia Pearl, Chair of the TurningPoint Board, at a United Way event and knew right away that the organization was a great match for him. Dr. Jones states: "Cancer patients fortunate enough to survive must then pivot to address quality of life issues they now have before them. That's why TurningPoint is so vitally important. Survival may seem diminished for some without regaining the joy of being active again. Once I met the dedicated and caring members of the board and staff, my decision was confirmed". In 2013, he will serve as Vice-Chair for TurningPoint's Board of Directors and will Chair the board in 2014.

Evidence Update: Ways You Can Reduce Hot Flashes
|
Evidence Update: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Physical Exercise to Reduce Hot Flashes
A recent research study examined the effectiveness of various treatments to alleviate menopausal symptoms in patients with breast cancer experiencing treatment-induced menopause. The treatments studied were: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) consisting of group discussions and relaxation sessions with a clinical psychologist; physical exercise (PE) consisting of 2.5 to 3 hours per week of individually tailored, home-based exercise; and combined intervention (CBT+PE).
The study showed that physical exercise (PE) can be effective in reducing the frequency of hot flashes and night sweats. It showed that group discussions about menopause symptoms combined with relaxation techniques (CBT) helped to make hot flashes and night sweats seem less burdensome for newly-menopausal women. The CBT group also showed an increase in sexual activity, while the exercise group showed an improvement in physical function.
So ladies...here are a few more good reasons to practice stress reduction and to increase exercise in your life!
Exercisers in this study selected their favorite form of aerobic exercise - swimming, running, walking or cycling - and used heart rate monitors to be sure that they achieved their target heart rate. Our TurningPoint physical therapists can help you to find your target heart rate!
Home relaxation techniques can include meditation, yoga or using simple relaxation CDs. Our TurningPoint counselor can help you learn some relaxation techniques!
