TurningPoint Women's Healthcare
Annual Campaign | |
Please Support TurningPoint's 2012 Campaign to
'Say Yes to a New Address!'
It has been a very exciting year for TurningPoint Women's Healthcare as we strive to continue our mission of providing, promoting and advocating specialized and evidence-based rehabilitation care for women with breast cancer. In 2012, TurningPoint will provide over 3,000 physical therapy, massage therapy, counseling and nutrition visits; serve over 300 new patients; and provide financial assistance to 45% of those served. TurningPoint participated in a landmark project with the American Cancer Society that represents a huge step towards making rehabilitation and exercise part of every woman's care.
Next year, TurningPoint will celebrate our 10th anniversary! We have outgrown our space and plan a move in early 2013 to larger and more accessible space to better serve women and their families from all over Greater Atlanta. Our new location, with easy highway and public transportation access will be in the area of I285 and GA400 highways. It will be larger, include a state-of-the-art gym as well as much needed meeting space. New space will allow us to serve more women and enhance our advocacy and education programs for healthcare providers to increase awareness about survivorship issues and the role of rehabilitation and exercise.

The focus of this year's Annual Fall Campaign will be to support our move. Of course, it will continue to help us provide financial assistance to women in need and offer our education and support programs. Lori Allen, TLC star of 'Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta', kicked off our campaign to fund new space with a generous donation. Please join her to 'Say Yes to a New Address!' Click on the image to the right to see Lori's message.
Your generous gift - of any amount - will give us the power to serve all women with breast cancer regardless of their ability to pay for services. Thank you for your support in the past, and for considering our request for support once again.

| Patient Perspective: Sally Newell |
Still Going Strong at 75!
 | | Swimmers Sally Newell, Ryan Lochte and Sally's grandaughter Sarah Newell (right to left) |
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1991. Shortly after that, I developed lymphedema. At that time, the belief was that lymphedema develops from either lifting anything heavy or making small repetitive motions. In spite of this concern, I fell in love with the sport of swimming shortly after my mastectomy. I quickly discovered breast stroke to be my favorite event! Now I participate in meets across the country and I am a competitive masters swimmer. I am ranked #1 in the nation in (what other stroke but) breast stroke! In 1993 I was thrilled to be a member of a relay which broke a world record.
I now know that swimming may be one of the best things I could do for lymphedema. I train in the pool, three times a week, along with dryland exercises that include weight lifting, two days a week. When I'm not at the pool, I love to golf, but gave up on the game of tennis...who has time!
Recently I had a flare-up of my lymphedema and a mutual breast cancer survivor and fellow golfer suggested I turn to TurningPoint for help. I learned from the TurningPoint physical therapists that weight lifting does not cause lymphedema, but that it can actually help control lymphedema and reduce risk of getting it. TurningPoint therapists advised me on how to minimize my lymphedema and keep it under control. I have returned to wearing the compression sleeve which helps control the size of my arm. TurningPoint will walk beside me to make sure it stays under control. I have greatly appreciated all that TurningPoint has done for me and plan to continue my affiliation with this fine organization.
As you can see, lymphedema need not limit your activity; if anything, it should encourage it!

Evidence Update: Benefits of Exercise Documented

Evidence Update: Women's Perceived Benefits of Exercise During and After Breast Cancer Treatment
Clinical studies show that the benefits of exercise for women during and after breast cancer treatment include a positive effect on quality of life, aerobic capacity, fatigue, body mass index, bone loss, stress, depression, sleeping problems, and mood disturbances. Physical activity that contributes to weight management may lower a women's risk of breast cancer recurrence. But what are women's perceptions of the benefits of exercise during and after treatment?
A recent study examines women's experiences and perceptions about exercising during or after their breast cancer treatments. Forty-five women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer within the previous two years were subjects in the study and participated in an individualized exercise program that included cardiovascular and resistance exercise. The women were interviewed at various stages in the program and their responses were analyzed.
Whether in treatment or post-treatment, women attributed psychological, physical, and social benefits to their participation in the exercise program. Participants credited the program with helping them to feel better, regain control over their bodies and their lives, manage their emotions, and prepare them to live healthfully going forward. In addition to the expected physical positive physical benefits of exercise, many women commented particularly on the emotional and psychological benefits:
"Psychologically, it makes you feel like you are empowered because you can do something. And it gets you out of yourself. For one, it gets you socially around people in a healthy environment. And it gets you out of just thinking about yourself and your pain and your grief and all of the emotional drama and fear of dying and anxieties...it just raised my spirits. It made me feel much more positive and less anxious."
"I feel emotionally better and physically better if I do some kind of exercise. It's something that I do for myself. I think that is a big piece of it. It's time for me and it makes me feel more normal having gone through all the things I've had to go through in my body. The fact that I can still workout makes me feel healthy."
How can TurningPoint help YOU get into the exercise groove?
We offer individualized exercise consultation and this month, we offer a session on 'The Science of Walking' with Cathy Furbish, DPT, CLT and Anita Boyce, PTA. Come and learn more about how to make the most of your walking program, with tips for intensity, frequency and keeping at it!
