Annual Campaign

Please Support TurningPoint's 2012 Annual Campaign to 'Say Yes to a New Address!'

It has been a very exciting year for TurningPoint Women's Healthcare as we strive to continue our mission of providing, promoting and advocating specialized and evidence-based rehabilitation care for women with breast cancer. In 2012, TurningPoint will provide over 3,000 physical therapy, massage therapy, counseling and nutrition visits; serve over 300 new patients; and provide financial assistance to 45% of those served. TurningPoint participated in a landmark project with the American Cancer Society that represents a huge step towards making rehabilitation and exercise part of every woman's care.

Next year, TurningPoint will celebrate our 10th anniversary! We have outgrown our space and plan a move in early 2013 to larger and more accessible space to better serve women and their families from all over Greater Atlanta. Our new location, with easy highway and public transportation access will be in the area of I285 and GA400 highways. It will be larger, include a state-of-the-art gym as well as much needed meeting space.  New space will allow us to serve more women and enhance our advocacy and education programs for healthcare providers to increase

awareness about survivorship issues and the role of rehabilitation and exercise.

The focus of this year's Annual Fall Campaign will be to support our move. Of course, it will continue to help us provide financial assistance to women in need and offer our education and support programs. Lori Allen, TLC star of 'Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta', kicked off our campaign to fund new space with a generous donation. Please join her to 'Say Yes to a New Address!'  Click on the image to the right to see Lori's message.

Your generous gift - of any amount - will give us the power to serve all women with breast cancer regardless of their ability to pay for services. Thank you for your support in the past, and for considering our request for support once again.

Evidence Update: AVON Funds a Study to Examine New Model of Breast Cancer Rehabilitation

Dr. Gabram
Sheryl Gabram, MD Surgeon-in-Chief, Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta,Director of the AVON Comprehensive Breast Center at Grady, TurningPoint Medical Advisory Board member with Angelique Culver, Associate General Counsel, Grady Health System. Angelique is a 4 year breast cancer survivor and a mutual former patient of TurningPoint and Dr. Gabram.

AVON Comprehensive Breast Center at Grady partners with TurningPoint on Study to Examine the New Prospective Surveillance Model

Made possible by funding support from the AVON Foundation, the pilot study "Clinical feasibility of the prospective surveillance model for rehabilitation for women with breast cancer" is expected to open in November 2012. Designed by Sheryl Gabram, MD, with Jill Binkley, PT, MSc, CLT, Executive Director of TurningPoint Women's Healthcare and Winifred Thompson, PhD, from the Rollins School of Public Health, the study aims to promote monitoring for breast cancer related physical impairments during and after treatment.

"The current model of medical care for women with breast cancer focuses on treatment of the disease, followed by intermittent surveillance to detect recurrence and any other problems patients report," says Dr. Gabram, Grady Health System surgeon-in-chief and director of the AVON Comprehensive Breast Center at Grady and TurningPoint Advisory Board member. "While these are extremely critical, most women may have subtle physical impairments as a result of their breast cancer treatment that impact function and quality of life." The Prospective Surveillance Model (PSM) is the first instance of a dedicated plan for breast cancer patients that guides functional rehabilitation, identifies an individualized rehabilitation prescription, and promotes healthy behaviors during and after cancer treatment. The PSM promotes close monitoring of such common breast cancer-related conditions as shoulder problems, fatigue, weight gain, weakness, lymphedema, and osteoporosis. Ideally, the study will establish a model of early detection of breast cancer treatment impairments through periodic examinations and therapies both during and after cancer treatment, leading to rehabilitative and exercise programs when problems are identified.

TurningPoint and Avon/Grady are excited to be among the first centers to implement this innovative model which affords an opportunity to study the true incidence of treatment-related impairments, the feasibility and logistics of implementation, its associated costs, and the degree of patient benefit derived. Our plan is to study the model in the AVON Comprehensive Breast Center at Grady, in the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University and at TurningPoint Women's Healthcare, giving us the opportunity to compare the implementation across different practice sites so the data can be extrapolated for others to apply.

Patient Perspective:  Dawn Bellamy

Celebrating the Completion of my Journey

No one expects to ever get that dreaded phone call. Initially I was in shock when I heard my diagnosis of breast cancer.  Then I took the challenge on full-force during the past year.

TurningPoint became a big part of that for me.  I walked in a bit nervous for my first physical therapy consultation. That was the last time I felt nervous to enter. These ladies are very special to me and any breast cancer patient they touch. They made my recovery much easier and helped me to understand what was going on with my body. I welcomed my appointments because I knew I would be another step closer to getting 100% range of motion with both arms.

Dawn Bellamy and her son as she completed the 2-Day Walk!

The weekend of October 6-7 of this year was a very special weekend for me. It was my rookie year as a survivor walker in the Atlanta 2-Day Walk for Breast Cancer. The best part was that it was my "Celebration Walk." I was celebrating conquering breast cancer. My final treatment was completed mid-September.

The camaraderie and sisterhood were unbelievable over this inspirational weekend.  30 miles over two days.....we did it for ourselves, loved ones, friends and for those who could not make this walk.

I won't lie; it was challenging and very emotional for me. However, it empowered me to fight for the women who can't always afford proper care in the state of Georgia. I have already signed up to walk the 2-Day in 2013. It's the Journey, the organizer of the 2-Day Walk, has generously supported TurningPoint as a grantee for the past nine years.

Come join us on October 5-6, 2013....you will feel an indescribable connection with many special women.
