Severe Weather Awareness Week
Are You Prepared for a Disaster?
Disasters can strike quickly and without warning. You could be anywhere - at work, at school, or in a car. What would you do if basic services - water, gas, electricity or telephones were cut off?

Businesses can cope with disasters by preparing in advance and working together as a team. Knowing what to do is your best defense against the burden of a disaster. Being prepared and understanding what to do can reduce fear anxiety, and losses that accompany disasters. You should know how to respond to severe weather or any disaster that could occur in your area. Each disaster has lasting effects - people are seriously injured, some are killed, and property damage runs into the billions of dollars.

The Yankton County Emergency Management team has provided an Emergency Response Plan Worksheet for your Business!  Don't wait until disaster strikes!

Girls on the Run Program
A few months ago, United Way of Yankton approached the Yankton School District about sponsoring a Girls on the Run program at our elementary schools. We agreed to pilot the program at both Lincoln Elementary School and Beadle Elementary School.

Girls on the Run program involves girls in grades 3-5 who participate in a 10-12 week after school program. Throughout the program the girls make new friends, build their self-confidence and celebrate the great things that make them who they are as individuals.

25 Rules to Successful Tourism
by Roger Brooks - Lesson Eleven
"Critical Mass is Not Just a Religious Experience"
Roger Brooks states in this lesson "if visitors want their shopping experience to be a real blessing and a truly religious experience, their best bet is to find a community that has visitor-oriented retail in a compact setting. This is what is referred to as critical mass." He goes on to give an example: Would you make a special trip to a community to visit its outlet stores knowing that the 30 stores were in different locations all over town or would you prefer they were in a single location?

He states that as few as 15 visitor-oriented establishments with dining and treats within a couple of blocks can spur very strong retail sales and can totally revitalize a town. He finishes this lesson with the rule of 10/10/10:
  1. 10 destinations retail shops
  2. 10 venues for dining and treats
  3. 10 places open after 6 pm as nightlife is critical as well
Is Yankton meeting this rule?
