Love Your Mother

Dear Parents and Parents-to-be,

Back in 1998, two years after opening 8 Limbs, I followed a passion for childbirth and took the doula training at Seattle Midwifery School. Within a month I realized doula work would be tough with a teaching schedule, but I thought teaching yoga to pregnant women would be a great way to bridge my two passions. That summer I took Colette Crawford's very first Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga Teacher Training and started classes at 8 Limbs as soon as I graduated. Ever since, with only brief breaks for maternity leave, I have taught yoga to mamas and mamas-to-be twice a week on Capitol Hill (and for a few years in Wedgwood!), and have been training teachers myself since 2008.

Seventeen years later, I am taking a break. I just taught my last scheduled postnatal class (thought I'll sub from time to time!) and will teach my last prenatal class on Monday, September 28. I am trying to birth a new project, a memoir about my journey as a woman entrepreneur and mother, so I need to focus my energy in that direction. Ironically, Yoga Journal just featured Seattle (and 8 Limbs) in their recent article about America's Top Yoga Towns that calls Seattle: the place for Family-Friendly Yoga!

Other changes in Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga: as prenatal and postnatal classes are now included in all memberships and class passes we will discontinue the pre/postnatal class passes starting in October. Ta da!

And don't forget, 8 Limbs Capitol Hill and Phinney Ridge offer childcare some weekday mornings, see end of this email for regularly scheduled offerings, but always check the website for any cancellations.

Have a great Fall!

Family yoga is a time to share, learn and explore while practicing yoga together. Yoga comes to life in this fun and creative workshop aimed to stimulate, relax, and connect. In this workshop we will focus on connecting with ourselves and our family members in body, mind, and spirit. These 60-minute workshops allow for strengthening bonds by way of partner yoga, creative movement, animated breathing, deep relaxation and much more. Sprinkled with music, crafts, picture books and age appropriate props,  we will spark the imagination and most of all have FUN. Family yoga is open to extended family members and caregivers too! Children ages 2-5 with parent and/or caregiver. February sold out in advance! Sign up early with some friends!

Yoga helps kids get in touch with their bodies, strengthen and relax their muscles, and develop coordination, focus, and confidence. We will practice kid-style asana (postures) and pranayama (breathing) in a playful, supportive, and safe environment. Through experiential games we introduce the yamas (how to treat others) and the niyamas (how to treat yourself), deepening a child's sense of respect and awareness. Yoga is universal! It's not dogmatic - just healthy fun! Drop your kids off at yoga, and have an hour to yourself.

Yoga offers techniques for self-awareness, and thus connects us to inner peace. It helps us deal with life situations from a position of calm and strength. Yoga can be an important sanctuary for "tweens", a place to develop self-confidence as well as focus while having fun! This series will engage girls aged 10 - 13 through asana practice, meditation, and breath practices.
