Waaaay back in the fall of 1996, when Diamond Dallas Page was best known for wrestling and "core power" was a strength not a brand, we opened the first 8 Limbs Yoga Center on Capitol Hill to provide an inclusive home for yoga in Seattle. Rather than teach one style or school of yoga, our goal was to make the practice accessible and welcoming to all - instructionally, as well as financially and emotionally.
Eighteen years later we've really grown up, but our mission remains essentially the same: to create a supportive, inclusive, and non-competitive atmosphere in which yoga practitioners can learn and grow.
But 8 Limbs is more than a supportive and non-competitive atmosphere. It is a community. And it is part of many larger communities in our vibrant and flourishing city, a web of consciousness and sustainability.
This month we want to honor and cultivate these connections and relationships within and around our small, local business. Whether you come to 8 Limbs once a day or once a year, whether you enjoy meeting the people in your class or cringe when a teacher asks for introductions, whether you like to flow or be still or both, you are part of a community of yoga practitioners, one that is inclusive, welcoming, and respectful.
So help us out:
1. Comment on today's post "What does the 8 Limbs community mean to you?" on Facebook. We'll pick one entry on September 8 to receive a free 5-class pass.
2. While you're there, enter a photo of you practicing yoga on your summer travels on the Aug. 24 FB post to win an 8 Limbs t-shirt.
3. Tell us about you! We want to publish monthly Student Profiles like our Teacher Profiles. Visit the 8 Limbs Blog for our Student Profile Questionnaire.
4. Post the communities/organizations/businesses you are a part of on your own FB page and tag them (8 Limbs is "8 Limbs Yoga Centers").
5. Read about Neighbor Day at left and consider starting one on your own block, neighborhood, or condominium.
6. Come this Thursday to hear Pandit Rajmani Tigunait, teacher of my teachers - events are community in action!
7. Study with teacher of Kate Bradfield and Jonna Bracken, Tias Little Oct. 3-5.
8. Become part of our work team - learn about openings at the end of this email.
And have a great September. One more month til we actually turn 18!
